Woodlawn Principal's Blog 3/8/19

Friday is here and our Spring Conferences are done!  I was able to get into many of the conferences from last night and this afternoon, and I was very impressed with how our students did presenting to their parents.  We have worked hard as a district to get our students to be a part of their learning, really understanding what is asked of them and how to get it accomplished. Thank you to everyone who was able to participate in these conferences.  As a public service announcement, we will be turning our clocks forward one hour this weekend.  Less weekend, more sunlight.  Right now, I would take that trade.

Internet Safety Concern

By now you are likely aware of an Internet safety concern that has surfaced called Momo.

The “Momo Challenge/Game” begins with the recipient receiving a notification or watching a video which includes an image of a scary face/statue. The recipient is urged to perform potentially dangerous acts through intimidation techniques.

There is a attached a flyer put out by the National Online Safety Institute regarding this challenge.

This is a good reminder that all of us need to remember the importance of internet safety. No filter is 100% effective. Today we are addressing Momo, however tomorrow it may be something else. Being responsible and diligent regarding best practices around the use of technology is a practice that all can benefit from. Common Sense Media is a great resource for any human being that uses the internet. There is a link to Common Sense Media also included below.

Keeping Teens Safe on the Internet

Join Stand Strong on Thursday, March 14th at 7:00 - 8:30 PM at Lincolnshire Village Hall, One Olde Half Day Road, Lincolnshire, to learn more about this important topic.

Finally, at some point, you are going to lose a battle and you just have to accept it. It is how you accept it that matters. This year, our boys basketball team ran into an opponent that had unsportsmanlike and unruly fans. Although we lost a close game, our boys saw how our parents handled the loss with dignity and class. Lesson learned. A baseball team that I played for began our double elimination playoffs by losing to a team that hadn’t won a game all year. That was ugly. As our center fielder in that game, I dropped a line drive in the first inning allowing two runs to score. To this day, I have no idea how that happened. The good part of this story is that we showed resilience and bounced back, making it to the championship game. Lesson learned.

The loss I need to discuss today is one that I mentioned in my 9/28/18 blog about our pantry at home. I had stopped organizing the pantry because a difference in philosophy with my wife on what actually needed to be in there. Over 5 months had gone by and I honestly tried to win this battle. I just couldn’t take it anymore. Cereal on the wrong shelf, snacks all over the place, canned goods with the labels facing in different directions, it was anarchy. Last weekend I broke down and organized it to my liking. Nothing has been said in the house about my concession, but a wry little smile from her speaks volumes. Much like our games of Dr. Mario, Words with Friends or Jeopardy, the pantry is simply another loss. Lesson learned.

It’s cool, i’ll just stick something in the grocery cart this weekend when she isn’t looking. (What happened to losing with dignity and class?)

Have a great weekend.
