Woodlawn Principal Blog 9/2/22

9/2/22

Happy Friday everyone!  Wow, it has been a week here at Woodlawn!  Curriculum Night on Monday and Wednesday, Picture Day, MAP Testing, tryouts and practices continued and our PTO sponsored a welcome to 6th grade lunch.  Thank you to everyone who made their way to Woodlawn this week to be a part of some of these events!   I was especially pleased with having the parents meet the teachers at our Curriculum Night.  You could almost feel the relief of parents getting to meet the teachers in person.  The staff was thrilled to have the opportunity to meet the parents and have a sense of returning to the way things were.  If you were not able to attend, here are the presentations:

D96 Thought Exchange Partnership

The District 96 Thought Exchange Partnership (TEP) offers parents opportunities to give feedback and receive information about District instruction, programs, and initiatives. Understanding parent perceptions is helpful for planning and communicating. Contact District 96 Community Parent Liaison Lubna Andrabi, 847.459.4260, ext. 8136, with questions. In particular, the District invites parents who have students enrolled at Willow Grove Early Learning Center to consider joining the Thought Exchange Partnership. The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 15 from 6:30-8:00.p.m.

Law Enforcement Safety Drill EDUCATION

On October 14th, Woodlawn will be conducting the annual Law Enforcement Safety Drill EDUCATION. Students will be learning age appropriate safety procedures.

In compliance with the Safety Drill Act, parents have the right to exempt their child from the Law Enforcement Drill EDUCATION with their school peers.

If you do not wish your child to participate in the Law Enforcement Safety Drill Education with the other peers, please contact Greg Grana @ [email protected].  The administration will arrange for an alternative review of safety procedures with your child.

If we do not hear from you, we will assume your child has permission to participate in the drill.

Erin’s Law

An Illinois law known as Erin’s Law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness/prevention curriculum for Kindergarten through Grade 12.

Kildeer Countryside CCSD 96 researched and observed best practices and programs for delivering this instruction, selecting Be Seen & Heard ©. For more information about this presentation please go to www.victorpacini.com/peace-of-mind-2

The focus of this developmentally appropriate and interactive program is to teach children skills to keep them safe from danger or abuse. Concepts discussed will include distinguishing safe from unsafe touches, safety rules at home and school, saying NO, safe/unsafe secrets, and telling a trusted adult, as well as reinforcing that an adult’s touching him or her is not the child’s fault.

Opt-Out Procedures

The presentation to Woodlawn  students will be during the school day on September 14th, 2022. If you prefer that your child does not attend this prevention education session, please submit your written request or your questions to [email protected]

Finally, 32 years ago today, a goofy looking guy married a beautiful girl from the city of Chicago.  It was an unlikely union between a suburban guy and the aforementioned city girl.  Although they laughed a lot and had a great time together, they had a ton of differences. These differences included:

  • Going into the city, he hated it and she loved it
  • Her love of the Cubs and his obsession with the White Sox
  • She enjoyed musicals and plays and he just went along to be nice
  • He grew up having P.E. as his favorite class and P.E. class caused her emotional pain
  • She grew up in a Chicago bungalow and he never knew what a bungalow was
  • He was all over the place, trying to figure out what he wanted to do in life and she had a plan from day one, ultimately graduating Summa Cum Laude.  He wasn’t even close
  • He liked to spend and she was a saver
  • She was the oldest girl of nine kids (2nd oldest and eons more mature than her Irish twin brother) while he was the youngest in his family
  • He was a dreamer and she was steeped in reality

Somehow these two made a go of it and have never looked back.  I 100% know for a fact that without my wife, I would not be where I am today, being the principal of this amazing building.  For that you can thank her or if you aren’t really pleased with me, you can blame her.

Have a great Labor Day weekend!
