Woodlawn Principal's Blog 10/23/20

I hope everyone is having a good Friday and it has been a productive week.  As you heard earlier this week, we are taking an adaptive pause and reverting back to full remote learning for 10 days, beginning October 26th.  All grade levels across the district will abide by this.  On or before Wednesday, November 4th, D96  families will receive updated information about current metrics and when in-person hybrid learning will resume.

Please see Supt. Schmidt’s Oct. 21 MESSAGE for more details.

Picture Day Postponed

With the adaptive pause going into effect, we are postponing our Picture Day Make Ups.  We will let you know when this gets rescheduled.

Meals Are Available for Drive-Up Pick-Up

Any KCSD96 family choosing to do so may pick up free breakfasts/lunches for their students weekdays from 11 AM–1 PM when District 96 students are in session. SEE DETAILS

Red Ribbon Week is Next Week!

Check out this information on Red Ribbon Week, including chances for our students to win prizes!

October 23rd-October 30th, 2020

Red Ribbon Week is a national education week designed to teach our youth skills necessary to protect themselves from the dangers of alcohol and other drugs. Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to substance use and abuse. Woodlawn’s Red Ribbon Campaign promotes family, individual, and school responsibility for living healthy, drug-free lifestyles. We want to help our students feel empowered and in control of their own choices in order to create healthy lifestyles for themselves.

A child’s best asset is him/herself. Please join our Catalyst Club, composed of 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students, in demonstrating the importance of building the strengths, resiliencies, and values necessary to make healthy, informed choices and positive decisions now and throughout their lives.  The Catalyst Club, created in conjunction with the Stand Strong Community Coalition, is a leadership group dedicated to supporting and encouraging a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle.

***A contest will be held between Twin, Woodlawn, Aptakisic, Daniel Wright and West Oak!  Activities during the week will be held and each school will receive points based on participation.  In the end, one school will be the winner!

This is a team effort, so please talk to your children and encourage participation in our spirit and educational events during Red Ribbon Week.

My View

Things change.  I promise you that we are doing everything correctly and following the appropriate protocols.  Right now, the number of positive Covid cases are climbing and we have to be smart.  I have learned in my 20 years as an administrator that you will never make everyone happy.  I will continue to listen and be respectful to everyone who disagrees with me, but I have always held my responsibility of keeping our Woodlawn children, staff, and families safety at the very top of my priority list.  That hasn’t changed, it just looks different at this point. We will continue to work and meet the needs of our students.

Friendly Reminder

Have your Woodlawn student:

  • Charge their iPad
  • HAVE THEIR CAMERA ON DURING LESSONS
  • Use headphones if they need them

Finally, it rained the last two days.  As I was walking out of my house, I did the u-turn and went to grab an umbrella.  When I went to choose one of the (only) four umbrellas in my house, I found two of them were broken beyond repair, one was a clear, children’s umbrella and the other one was yellow with polka dots all over it.  Yep, even though it didn’t match what I was wearing, I went with the polka dots.  When I climbed into my car, I forgot that I had been playing the “how low can I let my gas tank get game”.  Not expecting rain, I lost this game in a big way.  Luckily, the world was able to see me fighting the wind, pumping gas and trying to balance a manly, yellow polka dot umbrella.  Impressive.  That evening, I went searching for any of the black umbrellas that I had accumulated through the years.  I was able to find a couple of them in other cars but for the most part, not nearly as many as expected were found.  How does this happen?  The game of musical umbrellas has turned into a losing proposition for me.  BJ Thomas gets me.
