Woodlawn Principal Blog 12/20/19

Winter Break is here!  Can you believe it? I hope that everyone has a safe and relaxing holiday season.  Classes resume on Monday, January 6th.  As you read through the blog, see if you can figure out the theme of my finally section.

Spirit Week

The Woodlawn spirit was in high force this week!  Between dressing for success, blue and white day, ugly sweaters and pajama day, we had a lot of fun!

BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS 8th Grade

Congratulations to our 8th grade boys “A” team who repeated as champions.  This group of talented students went undefeated both in their 7th and 8th grade years.

Ben Fawcett, Kaiden Ghazvini, Christian Uremovich, Randy Clay, Sharan Satish, Ethan Aghakhan, Enzo Petrella, Mason Hunter and Preston Kaplin.  (This was the only picture that I had, so a couple of the players are missing. Sorry!) Special thanks to volunteer coaches Mr. Lee and Mr. Swerdlow.  Congratulations to Mr. Donofrio who has been coaching basketball at Woodlawn since we opened and will be retiring at the end of the school year.  Their theme was "Try not. Do. Or do not.  There is no try."

Basketball - Still proud

Woodlawn made it to the championship game at both 7th grade levels and the 8th grade “B” team.  This has been a great season for all of our teams and I am very, very proud of our student athletes.

The Patriot Consortium Mathematics Placement Process

Over the last few years Stevenson High School and the feeder middle schools have created a scope and sequence and aligned the curriculum to the Common Core Standards for Mathematics. Their work defines four strands of mathematical proficiency to highlight attributes of a proficient mathematical thinker. Their criteria will serve to create a portrait of each student for use in recommending a Stevenson placement that matches a student's content knowledge as well as level of mathematics proficiency at this time. Finally, the last Star Wars movie opened last night.  I did not get tickets. I would love to have gone, but the timing wasn’t quite right.  Just to date myself, I remember standing in line at the old Woodfield theater to watch The Empire Strikes Back in 1980.  The line to get into the theater wrapped all the way around the building!  This was in a day when you showed up and hoped to get tickets. No pre reservations.  The front row was a possibility, sticky floors, no cup holders...I am talking rough times. Now,  I have to admit that I am still a Star Wars geek. I have a Star Wars license plate holder that says, “Never tell me the odds” (Han Solo), a Darth Vadar cup holders and an R2D2 who just hangs out in my car.  It just so happens that my car is black and the windows are tinted. Very Darth Vadarish. Kind of takes it to a whole new level of nerd. I promised myself that I would keep my blog short this week, however, I just want to pose one question to real Star Wars fans.  Why did C3PO say that he was freezing in the heat of the Tatooine desert, yet C3PO never complained about the cold when he was on the ice planet of Hoth? Fellow nerf herders, respond.

Have a wonderful break and MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!
