Woodlawn Principal Blog 9/13/19

Happy Friday the 13th!   Just for fun, let’s make it a full moon and have dessert day.  Thank you to the PTO and our wonderful volunteers who helped out today.  After a crazy morning things have settled down and we are back in business here at Woodlawn.  Just a few items for the blog today!

Missed MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Scores Sent Sept. 6?

Some parents have reported they did not receive their student's MAP scores sent by email last Friday afternoon, Sept. 6.

Delivery by two identified email service providers proved to be problematic, with reports of that specific email going directly to a spam folder.

If you did not receive the email–which included links to info about understanding student growth, RIT scores, and general info about the MAP assessment–please contact Assistant Superintendent of Teaching & Learning Jeanne Spiller.

Parking Lot

A couple of things to make our morning drop off safer and more efficient:

  1. If you are going to have your student wait in the car until everyone enters the building, please pull all the up on the west side of the Woodlawn parking lot.  Cars sitting in front of Woodlawn are causing issues for other drivers who have to maneuver around your parked car.

  2. Be aware of pedestrians walking through the parking lot.  Slow down and make the lot safer for faculty and students.

Attendance

Please remember to call your student in to our main office if they are ever going to miss a day of school.

Food After School

This is a new one for me…Students are allowed to have snacks after school that they bring from home.  Last school year, students began ordering food through Apps like Grubhub and Uber Eats to eat while waiting for a baskeball or volleyball game. I have disallowed this practice based upon safety alone.  I cannot have students running out to the parking lot and taking food from a stranger. I know that this is easily understood by parents and I appreciate your support.

Food Part 2

If your student ever forgets and you want to drop off a lunch of any type, bring it to the office and we will get it to your child.  Please know that we cannot allow you to ever bring in lunch for another student. Again, thank you for respecting our policies. FYI - this is a preemptive message and it hasn’t happened this year.

Thought Exchange Partnership - Parent Opportunity

Now seeking parents to fill open positions on our district Thought Exchange Partnership.  If you are looking for a way to get involved, be a voice for Woodlawn, and learn about the wonderful things happening in District 96, please consider joining. If you are interested in this opportunity, email me ([email protected]) to express interest by September 28th! Please know this will be a lottery for open spots. I will contact everyone to let you know if you have been selected! The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 11th in the evening.

Purpose:

*To share with parents information regarding district goals and initiatives, curricular and instructional innovations, programs and other informational topics.  (i.e. District Goals, MAP & PARCC Results)

*To review school board or school code required topics (i.e. Parent/Student Handbook, Discipline Policy, Grants, Calendar)

*To understand parent perceptions and solicit feedback on school district topics to assist the district in communication and planning.

Members serve a two-year term on a rotation basis. Once any two-year term is served, new members will be identified. Unless a parent has children at Woodlawn for both years of their term, they will serve as a representative for their elementary school for the final year if they are able.  If all parent review positions are not filled, members may serve additional terms to fill parent review roster In this manner, each committee member can receive information about a greater number of topics and share feedback over the two-year period and committee composition is more stable than reforming the entire committee annually.

Committee Composition Includes:

● Two to four parent members-at-large for each school and any PTO member.

● One special education district representative.

● One ELL district representative.

● One Bilingual district representative.

● One Board of Education representative and alternate.

● One representative appointed by the Board of Education.

● Teacher Representative(s) – to be invited based on agenda topic.

● Administrative Representative(s) – to be invited based on agenda topic.

Roles of the Members:

1. Active participant sharing opinions, questions, suggestions and feedback in positive ways

2. Act as district ambassadors to promote the district in the community

3. Direct other parents to the appropriate district personnel and resources as needed

4. Invite other parents to attend district sponsored meetings and events including identified Parent

Finally, I was convinced that our crazy lightning storm last night was literally in my backyard.  When the crack of the lighting is so loud that it drowns out the thunder, you are in the middle of a bad, bad storm.  The talk around school, by both students and staff was that it is Friday the 13th, a full moon, also known as a “harvest moon”.  A Friday the 13th full moon is actually a very rare occurrence.  Myself, I have had some rough experiences with weather in general.  I have been on a baseball field and golf course when lightning struck uncomfortably close.  Side note, I am the first person to pull teams off the field when there is lightning in the area.

Additionally, I was a part of a 25 car pile up during a blizzard on an ice covered road.  Yes, I was the second car in the mess, but it wasn’t my fault! The car in front of me decided to stop at the bottom of a steep hill with zero visibility.

In my younger days when I had knees that could handle it, I was in the middle of a long run distance run when a hail storm decided to pelt me mercilessly.  Now that I think about it, maybe it is just me and I am not getting the message. Steer clear of me the next time you see me. Either that or I should start watching Tom Skilling a little closer.  Tom is the man.

Have a good weekend.
