Woodlawn Principal Blog 9/6/19

I am always amazed how tired I am at the end of a shortened week.  I am not sure how it happens, maybe I am fitting five days of questions into four days of work.  Regardless, I am excited about the start of this school year and how well our students have been doing.  Knock on wood, this has been as smooth of a start as I can remember. I just have a few items for my blog this week.

Updated Approved Snack List - Slight change

The District has revised the APPROVED SNACK LIST. This list includes foods that are approved for students' Daily Snacks.

It also includes foods approved specifically for Special Events such as birthday treats for a class or for PTO class parties.

Find links to the District's Approved Snack List and Approved Snack List FAQs on the homepage of the KCSD96 website and the homepage of each school website

Thought Exchange Partnership - Parent Opportunity

Now seeking parents to fill open positions on our district Thought Exchange Partnership.  If you are looking for a way to get involved, be a voice for Woodlawn, and learn about the wonderful things happening in District 96, please consider joining. If you are interested in this opportunity, email me ([email protected]) to express interest by September 28th! Please know this will be a lottery for open spots. I will contact everyone to let you know if you have been selected! The first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 11th in the evening.

Purpose:

*To share with parents information regarding district goals and initiatives, curricular and instructional innovations, programs and other informational topics.  (i.e. District Goals, MAP & PARCC Results)

*To review school board or school code required topics (i.e. Parent/Student Handbook, Discipline Policy, Grants, Calendar)

*To understand parent perceptions and solicit feedback on school district topics to assist the district in communication and planning.

Members serve a two-year term on a rotation basis. Once any two-year term is served, new members will be identified. Unless a parent has children at Woodlawn for both years of their term, they will serve as a representative for their elementary school for the final year if they are able.  If all parent review positions are not filled, members may serve additional terms to fill parent review roster In this manner, each committee member can receive information about a greater number of topics and share feedback over the two-year period and committee composition is more stable than reforming the entire committee annually.

Committee Composition Includes:

● Two to four parent members-at-large for each school and any PTO member.

● One special education district representative.

● One ELL district representative.

● One Bilingual district representative.

● One Board of Education representative and alternate.

● One representative appointed by the Board of Education.

● Teacher Representative(s) – to be invited based on agenda topic.

● Administrative Representative(s) – to be invited based on agenda topic.

Roles of the Members:

1. Active participant sharing opinions, questions, suggestions and feedback in positive ways

2. Act as district ambassadors to promote the district in the community

3. Direct other parents to the appropriate district personnel and resources as needed

4. Invite other parents to attend district sponsored meetings and events including identified Parent

Finally, sometimes you just stumble into a huge weekend.  Last night, the Packers won. I’ll take it. We did just a little more than the Bears did, so I get to say my weekend of fun started last night.  Tonight is gender reveal night. This will be my second gender reveal experience. I am not sold on the whole process. Of my four children, I never wanted to know the gender. I only knew it for one of my crew.  The reveal went like this...We are having a baby. Do you know the gender? Yes, it’s a boy. That was it. I still believe that you should be surprised when the baby shows up. I am an old fuddy duddy like that.  Tomorrow night is the big one. For years and years I have been phoning in to WBBM News Radio 780 and playing the Smart Quiz Question in the morning (6:24a.m.). I have never even had the phone picked up and heard, “You are caller number 2, try again.”  This all changed for me on Wednesday morning when, not only was I caller number 7, I was able to get the question correct! (For those of you who care, the question was, what kind of goat doe mohair come from? Answer - An Angora goat. Whenever I hear the word mohair, I think of the Elton John and his song, Bennie and the Jets.)  So instead of sitting at home and relaxing on Saturday night, I get to travel to lovely Tinley Park to see…..wait for it…..ZZ TOP!! What?!? Yep, this would’ve been the hottest ticket in the fall of 1983, and I scored freebie tickets 36 years later. Timing is everything! Sunday will put me into a football coma and we start the whole process over on Monday.  Good times.

Have a great weekend!

P.s. Full disclosure, my wife gave me the answer to the goat question.
