Woodlawn Principal's Blog 4/12/19

Another week is in the books and we keep rolling along here at Woodlawn.  Last Saturday was an absolute highlight for me when many of our Woodlawn girls participated in the Girls Dream Day.  Students were able to spend a few hours getting insight into STEM professions and participated in hands on activities.  It really made me proud that we were able to host this event in Rachel Vondrak’s honor.

Special Lunch Today

We had a bit of a hiccup with our Special Lunch for 8th graders today.  Lunch arrived late and our students wound up being late to their 7th period class.  There was much sadness as our student had to hang out for an extra 15-30 minutes in our lunchroom.  I am sure that Chipotle will be receiving a strongly worded letter from our PTO. I hate those. Seriously, we apologize for the inconvenience the students had to endure.

IAR

Our IAR testing is just about over for our 7th & 8th grade students.  I am looking forward to see how our students fared on the performance test!  6th graders begin on Tuesday of next week!

IAR Assessment for Grades 3–8

The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is the new English/language arts and math state assessment for Grades 3–8 students in Illinois public schools.

The IAR replaces the PARCC assessment given the previous few years and is, in fact, very similar.

The testing window is designated as Apr. 8–26, but our students do not test every day during that period.

Read more info about the IAR, including our Testing Schedule, the impact of participation, and more.

As your building principal, I'm happy to answer any questions you have about the IAR assessment. Please call our school office or send me an email.

Please make sure your student has a good breakfast and is at school before 7:45a.m.

Finally, I am thrilled that baseball season is here as it brings me back to my youth.  Being on a team from the time I was 8 years old all the way through high school and college, followed by coaching and watching my son play up until a couple of years ago.   More importantly, the game itself means a lot to me. My dad taught me how to think the game and play it accordingly. The baseball field was the one place where I could go and not worry about anything for 3 hours at a time.  Baseball kept me focused on school and allowed me develop a leadership style. Humble brag, I was the captain of many teams that I played for throughout my life. Not because I was the best player, I wasn’t, not even close. It was because I was able to bring teammates together for a common cause.  I wound up in a profession where I could build my own team, hiring great teachers and staff, work with talented children and supportive parents, allowing all of us to shine and then bask in the success of all. My parents were really good at recognizing the skills of myself and my siblings. They knew that baseball was my passion and it would be with me forever.  I love baseball for what it has and continues to give to me. I love the game.
