Woodlawn Principal's Blog 4/5/19

We are back from Spring Break and ready for the end of the school year!  We still have a lot to get accomplished before the end of the year and time becomes an issues.  Just a few items for the blog this week.

IAR

IAR Assessment for Grades 3–8

The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is the new English/language arts and math state assessment for Grades 3–8 students in Illinois public schools.

The IAR replaces the PARCC assessment given the previous few years and is, in fact, very similar.

The testing window is designated as Apr. 8–26, but our students do not test every day during that period.

Read more info about the IAR, including our Testing Schedule, the impact of participation, and more.

As your building principal, I'm happy to answer any questions you have about the IAR assessment. Please call our school office or send me an email.

Please make sure your student has a good breakfast and is at school before 7:45a.m.

Finally, my break was really nice.  The wife and I created a long list of things to be done in the house and we worked at completing those tasks. It feels good to get things done.  I worked out daily and relaxed, really trying to lower my stress level. I did notice that there is one place that raises my level of frustration.  The left hand turn lane at certain stop lights. Specifically, the left turn on green only turn lanes. Let me explain...Depending upon where you are at the light, the left turn lane  can be a positive thing or it can create high levels of stress. For example, when I am the first car in line, I am relaxed and somewhat arrogant about going through the light. Even as the second or even the third car in line, I feel very confident that I am making it through the green light.  My anxiety kicks in when I am car number 4, 5 or 6. In my mind, I should make it through the light, but if cars 1, 2 or 3 are not paying attention, someone is going to lay on the horn. As noted in previous blogs, I am (usually) a very calm, almost serene driver. So when someone lays on the horn, it tends to rattle me.  I don’t want the cars in front of me to think that I am the hornblower, whereas I don’t want the people behind me to think I am the root of the problem. I do get frustrated if am car 7 or higher and see that someone is not paying attention and misses their turn. Now I run the risk of missing two or more lights in a row. Put your phone down people.  It will wait. Anyways, I am excited to be back at school and look forward to the non stressful things that will happen between now and the end of the school year.
