Principal's Message 1/10/20

1/10/20
TGIF… Twin Groves it’s Friday! I hope everyone had a wonderful Winter Vacation! Happy New Year!

What’s Happening at TG?

PE
For the first half of January we will be finishing up our dance unit. Following the dance unit we will be starting a volleyball unit. During this time the students will work on skills, strategy and game play. At the conclusion of the unit we will have a tournament involving all three classes.
During the volleyball unit we will continue with our fitness days. These days will focus on muscular strength and muscular endurance. The students will be involved in exercises which will include, bosu workouts, circuit training, plyometric training, and other cross training exercises.

Health
This rotation in health the students in eighth grade have begun learning about nutrition. We are focusing on how the foods they eat impact their overall health. Seventh graders are working on stress and understanding what stress does to the human body. We will also be looking at depression and suicide. In sixth grade, students are working on learning about first aid skills they will need later in life. They are learning how to save a victim that is choking, treatment for burns, and weather related emergencies.

Art
We are just finishing up our first projects and are looking forward to starting with new materials.  6th grade will begin creating a figure using wire and paper mache pulp. 7th grade will learn how to create a batik. 8th grade is learning about how formatting and fonts affect text for the quote paintings they will be starting very soon.

Written assignments are key to assessing some of our new targets. If students are not completing the work, or submitting incomplete work, they will receive an NEE (not enough evidence) and this will also be reflected on their learner responsibility grade. Work can be resubmitted for a target grade, but it will still affect the learner responsibility grades.

Music
As the new year begins, all grades will begin working on the keyboards. 6th grade will begin getting comfortable with the keyboard and composition. 7th Grade will be working on the 12 Bar Blues, and 8th Grade will work on melody and accompaniment. Advanced students will be working on more appropriate music for their level.

TASOL
Welcome to 2020! Students in TASOL are starting their sewing projects this month. Sixth grade will be completing a pillow with a design of their choice. Towards the end of the month, we will start preparing for our cooking unit and will be discussing nutrition through the MyPlate model. Seventh and Eighth grade students are finishing a money management unit they started before the break. Next week they will start sewing by reviewing basic sewing skills and learning to sew on buttons. Each student has picked out and will be completing a more complex sewing project.

Information about Erin’s Law and an Upcoming Assembly

Dear Parent/Guardians:

Erin’s Law, House Bill 6193 was signed by Governor Pat Quinn on January 24, 2013. This law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades pre-K through 12. Erin’s Law was developed in honor of Erin Merryn, a brave young woman who has crossed the country advocating for laws that will increase awareness of this crime against children.

One of the requirements of this law is that schools provide an age appropriate curriculum to all students relating to sexual abuse prevention. To this end, Erin Merryn herself will present to District 96 middle school students on Thursday, January 16th. We are thrilled to have her here to share her story and to provide students the tools needed for personal safety.

Nationwide, 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be the victim of child sexual abuse by the age of 18. Through this program aimed at educating and empowering students, we want to provide your student with the knowledge and skills to use if ever affected by sexual violence. District 96 believes that all of our students will benefit from participating in this program.

If you have any questions about the content of the program or if you wish to inquire about opting out, please feel free to contact your school principal.

Respectfully,
Amy Gluck
D96 Director of Educational Services

Notice of 5Essentials Student Survey Administration
We are writing to inform you about a student survey for 4th–8th graders that will be administered at your child’s school.

Elementary students will take the survey during the week of January 13th-17th and middle school students will take the survey on January 17th.

The Illinois 5Essentials Survey is based on 20 years of research at the University of Chicago. The survey asks students about their experiences in school, giving school leaders critical student input to help develop school improvement plans.

Students will be required to log in using their student ID and birth date in order to complete the survey. Students’ identities will be completely confidential. Teachers or administrators will never see individual responses to survey questions. Instead, they will receive only aggregated information, such as the total percentage of students who agree homework assignments help them learn the course material, for example.

Please be aware that under the Protection of Pupil Rights Act. 20 U.S.C. Section 1232(c) (1) (A), you have the right to review a copy of the questions your student(s) are asked. Find survey questions on the Illinois 5Essentials website (https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois).

If you do not want your son or daughter to participate, please contact your child’s principal.
