12/6/19
TGIF…Twin Groves it’s Friday!

Just a reminder...we will have an early release on Tuesday, December 10th. Students are dismissed at 1:30 PM.

What's Happening at Twin?

PE
In the month of December the students will finish up the floor hockey unit and begin the Dance unit.  The dance unit will have different requirements for each grade.  The students will put together a routine using those requirements and then present that routine at the end of the unit.  Fitness days will still be rotated in during the rest of the floor hockey unit.  There will be no fitness days during the dance unit.  On Dec. 3rd, Stevenson PE leaders came to run various small game activities to promote their program at SHS.

Health
This rotation in health, the students in 8th grade have begun learning about human sexuality.  The key focus for this rotation is abstinence, but we have discussed other forms of contraception as well.  The students also created a court case about sexual harassment.  In 7th grade we are learning about the health triangle and what makes up health.  Students are diving into self-esteem and what it means to stay positive.  Finally in 6th grade, students are working on decision making skills along with being an up-stander when confronting a bully.

Art
6th grade is working on drawing people using correct body proportions.  We will look at graffiti artist Keith Herring and his use of simple deconstructed figures to create art with a message in the NYC subways.
7th grade is learning how to draw using several techniques.  The goal is to draw an accurate image of a cartoon character for use in a printmaking project.  We will look at Pop Artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
8th grade is digging into the concept of the face and identity.  First, we are learning how to draw each feature of the face and correct facial proportions. We will look at artists Chuck Close and Frida Kahlo to see how they approached self-portraiture. Finally, our goal is to sculpt a bust (shoulders up) that incorporates a message with the intention that others will be able to correctly interpret the work.

Music
Welcome to a new trimester in General Music. As we get started, all grades will begin with keyboards. 6th Grade focus is on melody, 7th Grade focuses on harmony and the 12 Bar Blues Form, and the 8th Grade focus is on melody and harmony. Each student will begin at their current skill level and continue to develop their skills. Throughout the unit students will be given opportunites to extend themsevles musically.

Also, as we start a new trimeseter, the Twin Groves Chorus opens up the opportunity for students to join us as we work on our next concert material. Rehearsals are on Thursdays from 2:30-3:15. Please come join us starting on November 28.

TASOL
Welcome to a new trimester in TASOL. Students in 7th and 8th grade started this trimester with the laundry unit. Students have investigated the 5 steps of laundry and will be bringing home a Laundry at Home assignment. For the month of December, students will be focusing on the career and budget units. The 6th grade students have been concentrating on the family functions unit.

Spanish
In 6th grade Spanish, students are continuing with family vocabulary and utilizing adjectives to describe them.
In 7th grade Spanish, students are looking at the verbs ser vs. estar.
In 8th grade Spanish, students have been testing their Spanish skills with the AAPPL test through listening, reading, and writing.

The Patriot Consortium Mathematics Placement Process
Over the last few years Stevenson High School and the feeder middle schools have created a scope and sequence that aligned the curriculum to the Common Core Standards for Mathematics. Their work defines four strands of mathematical proficiency to highlight attributes of a proficient mathematical thinker. Their criteria will serve to create a portrait of each student for use in recommending a Stevenson placement that matches a student's content knowledge as well as level of mathematics proficiency at this time.
