What’s Happening at TG?

Health
The final rotation for the 6th graders was about the human body systems and human growth and development. We discussed the physical, social, and emotional changes that are starting to happen or that might happen in the next few weeks. Students were able to create Kahoot games and crossword puzzles in order to understand concepts. In 7th grade, the students learned about drugs in the BG area. These drugs include: heroin, alcohol, marijuana, prescription pills, and e-cigarettes. A culminating activity of a drug research project and a March Madness type of game was played in order to show mastery of learning skills. In 8th grade, students were studying about diseases. We covered the cold, flu, vaccines, heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. We learned about health insurance and why it is such a controversial issue here in the US. Students played a game on the iPad called Plague Inc. The purpose of this game is to create a disease, have a point of origin, and mutate the disease before the CDC can create a cure. The overall purpose is to eliminate all humans off of earth. Students needed to understand how diseases start, understand mutation patterns, and transmission patterns in order for them to succeed.

TASOL
This month in TASOL has been busy. The 7th and 8th grade students are working on multiple recipes in the kitchens. They are learning new cooking techniques and familiarizing themselves with different utensils and cooking tools. Students will be continuing to work in the kitchens for the remainder of the trimester. They will also complete a mini unit on consumerism. They will look at how to make purchases using informative decision making procedures. Sixth grade completed their own resumes in the career unit. They have started on their sewing projects which consists of a pillow with detail using three different stitches. Later this month, the 6th grade students will start working in the kitchens with introductory repcies.

IAR

Early April: IAR Assessment for Grades 3–8
The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) is the new English/language arts and math state assessment for Grades 3–8 students in Illinois public schools.

The IAR replaces the PARCC assessment given the previous few years and is, in fact, very similar.

The testing window is designated as April 8–26, but our students do not test every day during that period.

Read more info about the IAR, including our Testing Schedule, the impact of participation, and more.

As your building principal, I'm happy to answer any questions you have about the IAR assessment. Please call our school office or send me an email.
