Woodlawn Principal Blog 4/25/25

4/25/25

The last Friday in April is here and in just over a month, we will be heading into our summer break.  I had the honor of being at the Stevenson High School Scholarship Awards last night as the D96 representative. I was amazed at how many former Woodlawn students were receiving scholarships.  It was a great evening and I am so proud of our former students.  Please check out the short blog this week!

All School Assembly - May 2, 2025

We are so excited about Woodlawn's upcoming spirit assembly on Friday, May 2nd! At the spirit assembly, we are looking forward to recognizing some of our student groups and their amazing talents. Additionally, all students will have the chance to win gift cards and participate in some fun "minute-to-win-it" type of competition. Entries for the gift cards and competitions can be earned by participating in the spirit week leading up to the assembly. We would LOVE it if parents could encourage their students to get involved in the fun!

Finally, I always enjoy the NFL Draft.  Last night, the spectacle that is the NFL Draft was on and it just so happened to be in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  The fans were at a fever pitch by the time the Packers made their pick, and for the first time in forever, they added an offensive threat that made the crowd rejoice.  I wonder what it would be like if school districts had a draft to add teachers.  In reality, we do add teachers through the draft by recruiting first-year teachers out of college.  For years, I only added teachers coming out of college to our Woodlawn team.  With the teacher shortage, I resorted to more of a free-agent approach to hiring, sprinkling in a rookie (college student) here and there. The fun part of hiring teachers is projecting whether or not they are going to be successful within our system.  Yes, we have had tremendous success as a school throughout the years, bringing in some of the very best teachers around.  If you look at one of our old yearbooks, you will see that, just like a sports team, the Woodlawn staff turns over fairly quickly.  There is an art to interviewing and bringing in the right people to ensure your culture. Each of these NFL teams is trying to bring in the best talent, but will they believe in your organization and what you do to be the very best?  Believe it or not, that is what we do here at Woodlawn.  Looking forward to next year, we going to need a couple of new additions to our staff.  I can see it now on the very popular education channel…With the first pick in the 2025 teacher draft, Woodlawn Middle School selects, Bill Nye, Jr., Science Teacher from Michigan State University.  The Woodlawn families spring out of their chairs, high-fiving each other.  Families texting their approval and there is dancing in the streets of Long Grove.  Unfortunately, the number one teacher draft pick will not sign for as much money as a quarterback, defensive lineman, running back, or even a kicker.   Maybe in an alternate universe somewhere.
