Woodlawn Principal's Blog 4/4/25

4/4/25

The first Friday in April is here!  It is scary to see how fast time is going and how quickly we have moved through this school year.  I cannot express how pleased I am with the students at this point of the school year.  They are so much fun and so respectful to me.  I couldn’t have asked for three grade levels to be this great.  I just have a few things for the blog today.

Upcoming Dates:

4/17- Half Day- Students dismissed at 11:10 AM

4/18- No School

4/22- Early Release- Students dismissed at 1:30 PM

Dental Exams for 6th Grade Students ONLY

Please note that your child’s completed dental examination has an upcoming due date, per Illinois school law. The deadline for the dental examination is due no later than May 15 of the current school year. Proof of this required dental examination must have been completed within eighteen months prior to the May 15 deadline.

If you haven’t already done so, please make an appointment with your child’s dentist for a dental examination, have him and/or her complete the required form and return it to your child’s school nurse.

In the event that you are unable to fulfill this requirement, the state of Illinois does permit a waiver of the examination - Click here

Please send in the dental forms to our school nurse, Denise Kaufmann [email protected]

In Search Of…

Plans are in the works for another fun-filled spirit assembly! We need 5-6 inflatable costumes for staff to wear at the assembly for a fun activity. If you have a costume you are willing to borrow or donate, please have your student drop it off to Ms. Jakstas or Ms. Whalen. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Library Books due by April 21st

In order to prepare for the construction of the new Collaboratory ALL library books must be returned back to the learning center by APRIL 21st.  Although we will not be checking out books to students from Woodlawn, we encourage students to continue reading books from home, your public library, or from our ebook library, SORA.  All students have access to Sora on their iPads.

We appreciate your support in helping to remind your students to get their books turned back in on time.

Any questions, please reach out to Jaime Appell ([email protected])

Finally, I haven’t talked enough about Greg Bays this year.  For those of you who need a reminder of who Greg Bays is…he is our Assistant Principal this year.  Now you are up to speed.  Greg came here with a teaching background with high school experience.  It didn’t take long for me to see that he was an incredibly hard-working person who put in the time and effort to figure out what was needed within our system for him to succeed.  Greg Bays had the student interaction and discipline piece down from the start, but he quickly picked up on building relationships within our building and district.  He also worked to get into classrooms and meetings, gaining a deep understanding of the curriculum and how we function as a professional learning community.  Greg Bays is a planner and has a vision for the future, already bringing in updated systems in a few different areas.  All of that being said has me 100% confident that he is going to keep the momentum of Woodlawn going strong, but there is one intangible that puts my mind at ease.  Greg Bays understands and is a Woodlawn believer.  He understands culture and what it means to create a positive work environment, which will benefit your children.  Greg Bays knows when to be tough, when to give a student a break, when to talk, and when to listen.  Woodlawn is in great hands with a leader like Greg Bays.  I am excited for the future, and I know that he will be a valued member of our Woodlawn family.  Leadership comes naturally for Woodlawn's next Principal.

P.s.  Yes, I call him Greg Bays a lot.  It is weird to call someone by the same first name as yourself.
