10/18/24

I hope that everyone had a good week.  This week seemed to go quickly as we rolled past the mid-way point of October.  One of the things that I have always enjoyed about middle school is having students dress up on Halloween.  They are so funny and creative.  Check out the blog this week!

Upcoming Dates:

10/22- Early Release- Students dismissed at 1:30 p.m.

11/5- No School

Woodlawn Fall Festival Party

The PTO-free Fall Festival is in a few weeks! However, we still need parent volunteers to help make this event a success. Please log into the Woodlawn PTO MTK to sign up.

Make sure you are signing your student(s) up for this fun event!

Parent Network: October 24th

PARENTS, please join us! On October 24th, Educator/Author/Speaker Michael Brandwein will be speaking at 7 pm at Twin Groves Middle School. In partnership with D102 & D103, Brandwein will present, "Talking it Out: How to Have Great Communication with Your Kids to Build Positive Relationships, Model How to Express Feelings, and Facilitate Problem-Solving". Please join us for a nationally acclaimed, highly entertaining, practical presentation that is packed with specific things to do and say to improve family communication and teach your children (of all ages) essential skills for life. We look forward to seeing you there!

Law Enforcement Safety Drill

On Monday, October 28th, Woodlawn will be conducting a Law Enforcement Safety Drill. Students will be evacuating the building during the drill. If the weather does not cooperate, we will reschedule the drill and communicate the rescheduled drill date. In compliance with the Safety Drill Act, parents have the right to exempt their child from the Law Enforcement Drill. If you do not wish your child to participate in the Law Enforcement Safety Drill, please contact Greg Grana at [email protected].  The administration will arrange for an alternative review of safety procedures with your child. If we do not hear from you, we will assume your child has permission to participate in the drill.

We will also be having a fire drill on October 23rd!  Just an FYI.

Running Wolves

Good luck to our Woodlawn students who are heading to the State Cross Country meet!  We are so proud of you.

Halloween Costumes

We allow Halloween costumes to be worn to school on October 31st every year.  I ask the following from the students:

  • Costumes are appropriate for school
  • No weapons
  • No blood or gore
  • No masks

Finally, I think that it is time to celebrate our students.  The start of the school year has been fun and kind of fast.  We began school in the middle of August and here we are in the middle of October.  Middle school can be a challenging time and it takes patience for students to develop their skills as learners.  Our current 8th-grade students, who are rocking it out and are loved by all of the adults they are working with, started out on the immature side two years ago.  They went through the pandemic but as we have seen, they are becoming one of our best groups of students in years.  So, what magical formula happens that has students grow up and become more serious and less immature?  If I knew that, I would be selling books around the world to middle school principals everywhere.  I have been impressed with the strides our 7th-grade students have made, watching them work in the classrooms and in the hallways.  They are miles ahead of where they were a year ago and, although I expect bumps in the road, I can see improvement from this group.  6th grade is always like the younger sibling.  You expect them to be a little wilder and immature, yet you love them anyway.  I fully believe that this will be a good group and I can see a number of solid leaders.  Each grade needs to be celebrated and enjoyed.  Parents, the younger grades are getting there and I cannot tell you how proud I am of this eighth grade class.  Working with this age group is incredible because you never know what you are going to get from day to day.  Since 1990, I have had the great pleasure of trying to figure out the middle school mind.  I will let you know when I finally figure them out.

Have a great weekend.
