It was a longer week for the Woodlawn community.  Two curriculum nights, picture day,  and a power outage have us all ready for a three-day weekend.  It has been a fun week as our basketball, soccer, and cross-country teams have started practicing.  Just a few items for the blog this week!

Upcoming Dates:

10/18- Picture Re-takes

Thank You, PTO

On Wednesday, the PTO hosted its annual complimentary 6th-grade 'Welcome to Woodlawn' Lunch. Thank you so much to all of our parent volunteers who came to help distribute food!  It was a great way for our 6th graders to start the school year!

Do you want to get involved? Read the Woodlawn PTO Blog and check out the Woodlawn PTO MTK.

Curriculum Night

Thank you to everyone who came out to our curriculum nights this week.  It is always great to see our Woodlawn parents and I love stopping in the classrooms and watching the teacher presentations.  I was overwhelmed with all of the well wishes and kind comments regarding my future.  The Woodlawn community is special.

Fire Safety Contest

Erin’s Law

An Illinois law known as Erin’s Law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness/prevention curriculum for Kindergarten through Grade 12.

Kildeer Countryside CCSD 96 researched and observed best practices and programs for delivering this instruction, selecting Be Seen & Heard ©. For more information about this presentation please go to www.victorpacini.com/peace-of-mind-2

This developmentally appropriate and interactive program focuses on teaching children skills to keep them safe from danger or abuse. Concepts discussed will include distinguishing safe from unsafe touches, safety rules at home and school, saying NO, safe/unsafe secrets, and telling a trusted adult, as well as reinforcing that an adult’s touching him or her is not the child’s fault.

Opt-Out Procedures

The presentation to Woodlawn students will be during the school day on September 11, 2024. If you prefer that your child does not attend this prevention education session, please submit your written request or your questions to Greg Grana [email protected].

Cell Phones

The students have been doing a great job of leaving their cell phones in their lockers.  Thank you parents for your support on this and for not communicating with your student during the school day.

Finally, as noted at curriculum night, I am a grandfather for the first time.  Yes, it is weird to actually say those words.  I was given the heads-up early in the day last Friday that the baby was ready to make an appearance.  It messed with my whole day.  My focus was partially on work but mostly on what was going on outside of work.  When the news came around 8 p.m. that we should come to the hospital, I literally jumped out of my chair and was on my way to the hospital.  After arriving at the hospital, I quickly learned my place in the grandparent pecking order.  Both grandmothers had extended baby-holding time before I was given my chance.  As incredible as it was to hold this tiny little human, I felt that the best part of the experience was watching my son hold his new bestie.  In all honesty, I went back 29+ years when I was the one holding my son in the beginning hours of his life.  Incredible.  I don’t look at myself as an old guy, but here we are.  It seems like just yesterday that my children were going through middle school, and now they are all in their 20’s, living life as professionals, contributing to society.  Parents, the time goes quickly.  Enjoy your time with your kids, I know some of you have students in college and others have their oldest as a 6th grader.  Regardless, time feels like it speeds up starting with this part of your life.  The great news is that it gets even better down the line.  I am proud to introduce the Woodlawn family to Gregory Arthur.  I hope you have a great weekend, I know that I will.
