Welcome to the last Principal’s Blog of the year!  It is always amazing how fast a school year goes and how much we will miss the students.  Thank you to everyone for reading the blog this year and I look forward to seeing everyone in August!

Summer Reading

As summer approaches, we encourage you to help your children dive into the joy of reading. Research consistently shows that children who read at least four books over the summer are better prepared for the upcoming school year and avoid the "summer slide"—a decline in reading skills that can occur during the break. Whether your child is an eager reader or a reluctant one, summer offers a unique opportunity to explore new worlds through books and foster a lifelong love of reading.

Our curated summer reading lists include a variety of genres from generational classics to new releases in dystopian, science fiction, historical fiction, and nonfiction, ensuring there's something for every reader.

Summer reading lists for all Early Childhood- 5th grade students have been updated on our website. Click HERE for the link to the website directly.

Additionally, all current 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students are required to complete a summer reading assignment for Middle School. Click HERE for this assignment.

Happy Reading!

Health Forms

REMINDER - To comply with Illinois State guidelines, a physical examination – including current immunization records – is required for all children entering an Illinois school for the first time, for children enrolling in kindergarten (even if they previously were enrolled in a District 96 Early Childhood program), and for students entering Grade 6.

REMINDER - Health Forms: Provide required HEALTH FORMS as soon as possible.  A physical and immunizations record needs to be on file in the nurse's office by October 15th or the student will be excluded from school.  STATE OF ILLINOIS CERTIFICATE OF CHILD HEALTH EXAMINATION FORM. Parents must also complete the fields for their child’s name and address, birth date, etc., at the top of the form on pages 1 and 2 in addition to the parent section on page 2, including a parent signature and date.

Finally, I want to thank the parents whose families have gone through Woodlawn & D96 and are moving on to high school.  A school district cannot be successful without the support of the parents and I am honored to have had the opportunity of working with you and your children.  It is so much fun getting to know the parents and building positive relationships through the years.

At graduation, a longtime D96 parent gave me a book, 365 Awesome, Random, Useless Facts so that I could pull some out in case I needed a blog topic.  Well, I need this today so you are about about to be exposed to some useless facts.

  • One of the toughest tongue twisters in the English language is “the sixth six sheiks sixth sheep’s sick.”
  • Only 10-12 % of the population is left-handed.
  • Bees are found on every continent except for Antarctica.
  • Your nose gets warmer when you lie.
  • Play-doh was originally used as wallpaper cleaner.
  • And…”a jiffy” is one trillionth of a second.

I hope to hear from everyone again in August!  Enjoy the summer.

Thank you again for all your support with Woodlawn!
