Finally, I try to end the blog with something lighthearted to send people into the weekend with the idea that things aren’t so bad.  I may not always succeed, but hopefully, it is at least worth a 60-second, easy read.  Lately, I have been struggling with my “barber shop” and this stresses me out.  I put barber shop in quotation marks because it is really a hybrid of a barber shop and a beauty salon.  I have always treated it as a barber shop, but I have no issue having the ladies cut my hair.  I mean the electric clippers are the same, hot towel treatment, neck shave (need that), and cheap aftershave splash when you finish.  Hold up the mirror, nod my head, move the mirror to the other side, nod again, and boom, I am done. Say goodbye to everyone and out the door I go.  It has always been first come, first serve.  It is a barbershop.  Simply put, that is how it works.  If it is packed, you go and sit.  No complaining, it is how life in a barber shop works.  Now, you don’t always get the person you want cutting your hair.  When the owner was getting older, you walked out of there with a C minus haircut.  In today’s educational terms, it would be around a 1.5 grade.  One of the biggest perks of having two sons was taking them to the barber shop with me when they were little.  The owner would look right at me for the next cut, so I sacrificed one of my boys to take one for the team.  I have told my sons that this is how it works in the barber shop world.  One day, they will do the same to their child.  Recently, when I showed up for my haircut, I was told that everyone is booked for hours.  This is not how the barber shop world works.  Some of my greatest days were started when I went to the barber shop and there was an open seat.  It was like found money.  Now I am told that it “might be best to make an appointment.”  What?!?  This is not how the barber shop is supposed to operate.  Making an appointment takes time and effort.  I like sitting in chairs, not talking to anyone around me for an extended period of time.  Just sitting and waiting for my turn, hoping to get a halfway decent chance (25%) at my favorite haircut person.  Last week, late on Friday afternoon, I looked up the number for the so-called barber shop and called to make an appointment.  As the phone rang, I began to stress about making a choice and disappointing the other 3 “barbers”.  As the phone was answered, it was someone who I didn’t recognize and now I had to deal with another person.  This person had some kind of a hearing issue because when they asked for my name, they screamed it out for everyone to hear.  I can only picture the entire place coming to a grinding halt as each of the hair professionals listened anxiously for their names to be called.  With this in my brain, I shifted gears and said, “I don’t care who cuts my hair, do you have something open at 9 a.m.? No. 10 a.m? No. 11 a.m. No.” This continued until a 3 p.m. opening happened.  Not my ideal time.  I like the morning but what the heck, I needed a cut.  Now the person on the phone shouts out, “Everyone is available, who do you want?” This is not what I wanted to hear.  All of this is way too much work.  Again, I want to walk in and be ignored until someone gives me the barber nod that it is my turn.  I kindly respond that I do not care and that they should just pick someone for me.  Of course, I have my favorite person but that is not how the barber shop lottery goes.  After being assigned a person, I show up the next day at 2:59 p.m. for my haircut.  I feel the tension in the room from the others who know that I didn’t choose them. This normally laid-back place has taken a turn for the worse.  This is not how the barber shop world goes.  I make hundreds of decisions daily.  I do not need the pressure of picking the person to cut my hair.  I need the good old days to return.  I did get a decent haircut though.

Have a good weekend.
