NEW *Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR)*

Students in grades 3 - 8 take the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) each spring. This year the district will be administering the IAR to students from Tuesday, April 2nd through Monday, April 8th. Ivy Hall Elementary has been selected for a field test this year, which will be administered on Tuesday, April 9th.

5Essentials Parent Survey

Please click THIS LINK and take the 5Essentials Survey for Parents/Guardians.
Woodlawn would like to increase parent participation. We need to be over 20% for this to count.  Help get us there.

As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school. Your participation will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide our improvement. Parent identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.

The window to complete the survey closes on March 29th. Thank you in advance!

NEW *Spring Family/Educator Conferences*

Spring Family/Educator Conferences are right around the corner. The conference dates are Thursday, March 21st from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM and Friday, March 22nd from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM.

We will be using Meet the Teacher as an electronic sign up for conferences. A School Messenger email was sent to families on Tuesday, March 5th at 5:00PM with a link to sign up for conferences.

Conferences will be held virtually using Meet the Teacher’s video conferencing platform unless parents request an in-person conference using the instructions bolded at the end of this message. After you have scheduled your conferences, you will receive an email from Meet the Teacher with a link you will use to access the video conferences.

Middle school parents will have the option to sign up with one core content teacher (see below) and pertinent exploratory/PE teachers. Please note: Students on the B-Day schedule will have their Spanish teachers available during this round of conferences. Available Middle School Core Teachers:

6th Grade: 3rd Period Teacher

7th Grade: 2nd Period Teacher

8th Grade: 4th Period Teacher

If you are unable to schedule a conference with a specific teacher, please remember that conferences are not the only time to communicate with teachers. Please feel free to reach out at any time.

REQUESTING AN IN-PERSON CONFERENCE

If you want to have an in-person conference with the teachers, you must notify the teachers via email by the end of the day on Tuesday, March 19th.

6th Grade Dental Forms Needed

Dear Parents/Guardians of District 96 6th Grade Students:

Please note that your child’s completed dental examination is now due, per Illinois school law. The deadline for the dental examination is no later than May 15 of the current school year.  Proof of this required dental examination must have been completed within eighteen months prior to the May 15 deadline.

If you haven’t already done so, please make an appointment with your child’s dentist for a dental examination, have him and/or her complete the required form, and return it to your child’s school nurse.

State of Illinois Proof of Dental Examination Form

In the event that you are unable to fulfill this requirement, the state of Illinois does permit a waiver of the examination.

State of Illinois Dental Waiver Form

Dental examination forms, as well as dental waiver forms, can be downloaded from the District’s website.

If you have any questions, please contact Denise Kaufmann at [email protected] or call the Woodlawn office at 847-353-8500.

Thank you for your prompt cooperation.

PTO SPRING FLING

The students were treated to a great Spring Fling where they had food, a photo booth, a ping pong competition, basketball games, a gaming truck, Kona Ice, and beautiful weather.  Such a great day for our Woodlawn students!

Finally, I am on a bad streak when it comes to picking a cart out at any type of store. As soon as you pull the cart out of the corral, you should notice a problem relatively quickly.  Nope.  I like to get to the backstretch of whichever store I am in before I say to myself, “Hey, there could be a problem with this cart.”  At this point, you cannot turn around because then you would need to backtrack a good distance, and there are now 5-10 items in the cart that would need to be transferred.  Instead, I decided to power through with any one of a myriad of different cartwheel issues.  First, the wobbly wheel that didn’t seem so bad 4 minutes ago is getting the attention of people 2 aisles over and the guys working in the deli.  The second wheel malfunction is the one-wheel break.  This was fine when nothing was in the cart, but when the case of water went in, it threw off the delicate balance of the cart’s equilibrium.  Now people are running up on my ankles because I am making emergency stops with no brake lights.  The third issue is the wayward wheel that makes the cart take a hard right-hand turn for no reason.  This issue has you smacking into other carts like you are a NASCAR driver and mothers pulling their children aside, letting you pass because they think that something is wrong with you.  Recently, I paid extra attention to the wheels so I would not have this issue.  I did notice a new warning sign on the cart but completely ignored it because, well, why wouldn’t I?  As I was exiting the store, sporting one of my 15 Woodlawn Middle School sweatshirts, the cart automatically came to a screeching halt, not letting any of the wheels move.  When I tell you that I was exiting the store, it was right in the middle of the doorway, now creating an inconvenience for everyone both coming and going.  It turns out that for some reason, my cart thought that I was some kind of master criminal and it locked itself up.  In this moment, I was so glad I had my Woodlawn sweatshirt on.  In this moment I was so glad that I could not move this thing an inch.  And in this moment I was so glad people are incredibly patient on a Sunday around 11 a.m.  The last time I felt this way, my 1970s Mercury Cougar (not a cool one) stalled in the center lane of the Kennedy during rush hour.  I learned that it takes someone with a key to unlock your cart to free you from grocery shopping cart jail.  It has been a rough go of it.

Have a good weekend.
