NEW *5Essentials Student Survey*

Beginning the week of February 12th, District 96 students in 4th-8th grade will be administered the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This 25-minute survey is based on over 20 years of research at the University of Chicago and asks students about their experiences in school with the purpose of providing school leaders with critical student input to help develop school improvement plans. Students’ identities will be completely confidential, and teachers and administrators will never see individual responses to survey questions and will only receive aggregated information.

Please be aware that under the Protection of Pupil Rights Act. 20 U.S.C. Section 1232(c) (1) (A), you have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your student(s). Survey questions can be found at the UChicago Impact Support Center. (https://impactsurveys.my.site.com/s/article/illinois-5essentials-survey-questions)

If you do not want your child’s input to be considered for school improvement purposes, please contact Greg Grana at [email protected] by February 12th.

NEW *5Essentials Survey for Parents/Guardians*
Beginning January 30th through March 29th, District 96 invites you to share your thoughts on the inner workings of your child’s school.  On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago.

As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.   Your participation will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide our improvement. Parent identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.

Please visit http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/ to begin the parent survey. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact UChicago Impact Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or [email protected].

Chess Tournament

Two Woodlawn students walked into an open chess competition at Niles North High School and took 3rd Place in the U12 team competition.  Congratulations to Luke Robertson and Kyle Hosomizu for their terrific performance and for adding to our trophy case.

Science Olympiad

Congratulations to both the Woodlawn Varsity and JV Science Olympiad teams for their performances at the Kildmas Invitational last Saturday.  Our students have been working and studying so hard, leading to this best-ever placement.  The invitational had 56 Varsity/JV teams and Woodlawn Varsity took 1st Place and our JV team took 2nd Place in their division.  Way to go Wolves!

Finally, it is Super Bowl weekend and the hype is about to meet reality.  Each year I come up with several Super Bowl factoids for all of you to impress and astound the group of people you watch the big game with. You all know the storylines, starting with Travis and Taylor…but other things can come into play this weekend, like the 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, who was the offensive coordinator in Atlanta when they had an epic collapse in Super Bowl LI (51) and blew a 28-3 lead.  This is the second time he has taken the 49ers to the Super Bowl.  The last time they lost to the…wait for it…Kansas City Chiefs.  Gulp.  Check out these facts and enjoy the game.  Side note, my favorite all-time commercial is (You Tube this) Chevy Super Bowl Ad Graduation Camero.  Simply the best.

  • How many times has the Super Bowl featured a rematch?

Super Bowl rematches have happened nine times, including this year! We've seen more than one game between the Cowboys and Steelers, 49ers and Bengals, Eagles and Patriots, Cowboys and Bills, Rams and Patriots, Giants and Patriots, Bills and Cowboys, and Dolphins and Washington.

  • Have Siblings Ever Faced Off in the Super Bowl?

It happened for the first time last year. Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce will face his brother Jason, the Eagles' center, for Super Bowl LVII.

  • Who Sang the Longest National Anthem?

Alicia Keys clocked in at 2 minutes 35 seconds during Super Bowl XLVII. The average length is about 1 minute and 50 seconds. We'll see how this year's performer Reba McEntire measures up!

  • Which Team Has the Most Super Bowl Wins?

The Steelers and Patriots are tied with six championships apiece. The 49ers have five, so a win this year would tie that stat.

  • Which Team Has the Most Super Bowl Losses?

The Denver Broncos and Patriots are tied with five losses each. The Broncos have three wins, most recently in 2016. The Broncos didn't make the playoffs this year, so they don't have a chance at Super Bowl LVII.

  • What Teams Have Never Played in a Super Bowl?

Four teams have the dubious distinction of never making it to a Super Bowl: The Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, and Jacksonville Jaguars. None of these teams made the Big Game, so that's not going to change this year.

  • Which City Has Hosted the Most Super Bowls?

Miami has hosted the Super Bowl 11 times, with Hard Rock Stadium hosting 6. The runner-up is New Orleans with 10. They'll take on the hosting duties again for Super Bowl LVIII in 2024.

  • Which College Has Produced the Most Super Bowl Quarterbacks?

This answer might surprise you. Cal leads the way with 5 QBs, including Aaron Rodgers. Alabama*, Notre Dame, and Purdue each have produced three.

  • How Much Money Do the Super Bowl Players Make?

The players get post-season bonuses, in addition to their NFL salaries. In 2022, players on the winning teams got $150,000, but when you add in their bonuses from previous playoff rounds, most took home $250,000. But don't feel to sorry for the losers: Last year, they ended up with about $185,000 for their post-season play. Some players have contract incentives for Super Bowl appearances. Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones will reportedly take home an additional $1 million for making it to the Big Game.

  • What Was the Coldest Super Bowl on Record?

The Super Bowl typically takes place in a warmer climate or at an indoor stadium. One stands out as the coldest—Super Bowl IV took place at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans, and the temperature at game time was a brisk 39 degrees. The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings in that matchup.

  • How Much Do the Super Bowl Rings Cost?

The winning team normally receives about 150 gem-encrusted Super Bowl rings for players, coaches, and other important members of the organization. The total for the set adds up to about $5 million. William "The Refrigerator" Perry's size 25 ring was the largest made to date for his performance with the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XX.

  • How Much Does the Lombardi Trophy Weigh?

The Lombardi Trophy, named after former Packers coach Vince Lombardi, is made each year by Tiffany & Co. and is valued at about $50,000. The sterling silver trophy weighs in at about 7 pounds, making it easy for the victors to lift over their heads.

  • Which Super Bowl featured the "Wardrobe Malfunction" incident?

Super Bowl XXXVIII (38) featuring Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake

  • Who was the first quarterback to win Super Bowls with two different teams?

Peyton Manning
