Happy mid-December everyone. I know that it is a busy time of year, and there is so much to accomplish and family to see for all of us. The students are doing a good job academically as we close in on Winter Break. Just a couple of items for the blog this week.

District 96 hosts a Newcomer Coffee & Conversation (REPEAT)
District 96 hosts a Newcomer Coffee & Conversation for parents and guardians of newly registered students, to allow them to ask questions and share information about their transition.
This year’s Coffee starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 19, at Ivy Hall Elementary School (Mat Room), 1072 Ivy Hall Lane, Buffalo Grove.
It is an informal opportunity for these new parents and guardians to ask questions and share their thoughts ~ with other parents and staff ~ about their experiences in the district. These parents might be experiencing the District’s social customs and teaching practices for the first time, just as their students have, and can glean from the experiences of others.
New parents/guardians who missed the New Family Tours in August are encouraged to attend this conversation. Those who did attend the tours are welcome to join this conversation to share how they are adjusting to the District 96 culture.
Coffee and other refreshments will be served.

Current Patriot Consortium Mathematics Placement Process- 8th Grade Only (REPEAT)
The consortium has created criteria that define the four strands of mathematical proficiency to highlight the attributes of a proficient mathematical thinker. The criteria are grouped into three categories (See chart on second page):
- Procedural Skills & Fluency (How well you can correctly use mathematics.)
- Conceptual Understanding (How well you utilize mathematical ideas, transfer your knowledge into new situations, and apply it to new contexts.)
- Problem Solving with Adaptive Reasoning and Strategic Competence (How well you can apply strategies and sound reasoning.)
Over the course of the year, the mathematics teachers will be discussing these criteria with the students in class to create a portrait of each student. This portrait will be used to recommend the students to the mathematics course at Stevenson High School that matches their content knowledge as well as level of mathematics proficiency at this time.
As a district and consortium, it is our vision that each student moves on to the next course in the sequence providing that there are no significant gaps in content knowledge. If there are significant gaps in content knowledge and a change in recommendation occurs, we will contact you. We feel that this process allows a mathematical picture of the student to develop over time, which will provide a more informed recommendation.
Course Sequence for Bridge Algebra 1 Students
-Algebra 1 with Mentor Math or Algebra 1 with Math Guided Study will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-4
-Algebra 1 will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-4
Course Sequence for Algebra 1 Students
-Geometry will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-4
-Geometry AB/BC will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-4
Course Sequence for Geometry Students
-Algebra 2 will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-3
-Algebra 2 AB/BC will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-3

Wolves of the Month
Congratulations to the Woodlawn Wolves of the Month for their outstanding character and leadership.

Finally, it is the little things in life that you have to enjoy. For myself, it is a text message from one of my children just saying “Hey dad!” for no reason, or making all of the traffic lights as I ride into work. More often than not, I will make an announcement at some point in the day to the office staff that “the lights were with me today”, and they just smile and shake their heads. Another little thing for me is when a middle school who may struggle with peers, seeks me out and has a talk with me as I stand in my normal morning spot. The conversation usually lasts around 20-30 seconds and is the highlight of my day. Things like these are gold. Life seems to throw junk and nonsense at all of us but truly enjoying the little moments is essential for our health. Once a year, something really fun happens and it brightens my day. On Monday, I took my normal route to work and as I came up N. Krueger, I saw that someone put a reflector on the deer crossing. Right on the nose. The person who does this may never know it, but it makes me smile and laugh. I hope that you all get that smile from something very soon. Enjoy the little things in life.
