Woodlawn Principal's Blog 10/27/23

Welcome to the weekend Woodlawn!  It was a fun week here as we celebrated Red Ribbon Week, Snowflake with our 7th graders, our Glow Party, Dessert Day and had our first dress rehearsal for the musical.  Each week I get reminded why I have the best job in the world.  Great staff, amazing kids and always something going on.

October 31st- Halloween

Please remember that Halloween Costumes need to follow the D96 Dress Code. We ask that no masks or full face paint be used by students.  Absolutely no weapons or other such props. Remember that it is a school day so students should be able to sit comfortably in their costumes during the school day.

I cannot wait for you to see what the office staff cooked up this year.

Woodlawn Red Ribbon Week 2023

October 23th-October 27th, 2023

What a great RED Ribbon week we have had here at Woodlawn!  The students participated by wearing their pajamas, favorite decade, class color, dressed like Adam Sandler and wore red...everything!  Throughout the week the students have also participated in door decorating, individual art projects, banner signing, a trivia wheel and Red Ribbon question of the day.

In addition our 7th Graders got to experience Operation Snowflake: an entire day dedicated to bringing together middle school students, high school leaders, and adults for a day of sharing, learning, and listening. The goal being to strengthen young people to help them be safe, healthy, make smart choices, and be drug free. The program strives to facilitate discussion and interaction among students, which lead to valuable decision making skills and how to handle peer pressure.

Please ask your student(s) what they participated in and keep the conversation about making good choices going at home.
Finally a thank you to all of our administration, teachers and staff who have helped support the students with activities during Red Ribbon week and a special thank you to our Woodlawn Catalyst Club for all their efforts and the hard work they put into making our Red Ribbon week such a success.

Finally, I believe in people.

Whether it is:

  • A new teacher to Woodlawn
  • A student who is struggling with their middle school self
  • A bus driver who gets up at the crack of dawn to get students here
  • One of our instructional aides who handle every responsibility with skill and patience
  • Any of the AP’s I have ever had the pleasure of working with
  • My incredible office staff
  • Our School Board and the District Office staff
  • The volunteer parents who hang out on a Wednesday night at our Glow Party
  • And everyone else that makes this building great

When you think about it, the number of moving parts to a school is incredible.  On any given day, there are a lot of things that can go wrong.  Instead, on any given day, things go right.  This incredible building functions at such a high level and our issues are minimal.  I have so much respect for each and every one of these groups and what they do for our school community.  It is easy to believe in one another when something incredible happens on a daily basis.  The norm nowadays is to sit back and point out what everyone else is doing wrong.  I want to acknowledge the other side of that coin and show the world that Woodlawn is an unbelievable organization that is supported by all.  Parents, you make this operation work. Staff, you are the BEST and I am so lucky to work in such a high character area.  I love it when you believe and that belief is paid back countless times over.

Have a great weekend.
