Woodlawn Principal's Blog 10/20/23

10/20/23

As I write the blog this week, I am watching the students in our musical practice in the cafeteria after school.  It warms my heart to see them enjoying themselves and having so much fun together.  We have a very exciting week coming up which includes our Red Ribbon Week activities and Snowflake for our 7th Grade students.

Tuesday, October 24th is Early Release!  Student dismissal is at 1:30p.m.

Woodlawn Red Ribbon Week 2023

October 24th-October 27th, 2023

Red Ribbon Week is a national education week designed to teach our youth skills necessary to protect themselves from the dangers of alcohol and other drugs. Research shows that children are less likely to use alcohol and other drugs when parents and other role models are clear and consistent in their opposition to substance use and abuse. Woodlawn Red Ribbon Campaign promotes family, individual, and school responsibility for living healthy, drug-free lifestyles. We want to help our students feel empowered and in control of their own choices in order to create healthy lifestyles for themselves.

A child’s best asset is him/herself. Please join our Woodlawn Catalyst Club in demonstrating the importance of building the strengths, resiliencies, and values necessary to make healthy informed choices and positive decisions now and throughout their lives.  The Woodlawn Catalyst Club, created in conjunction with the Stand Strong Coalition, is a leadership group dedicated to supporting and encouraging a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle.

This year’s message/theme, supported by the Catalyst Club, is “What’s Your Why?” In addition to the education and programming our club will offer throughout the year, we encourage you to have regular and open conversations with your children about why you want them to remain substance free, why YOU live a healthy lifestyle,  and to help them think about why they will personally choose to remain substance free. Make sure to check out the calendar of events below and encourage your children to get involved!

Please contact me at [email protected] with any questions.

SOCKTOBER -  Please Donate!

The Community Service Club is celebrating Socktober!! It’s time to donate new socks, hats, gloves, scarves and any cold weather gear! Drop off new things at the office all through October!! We will be donating to local shelters and appreciate your help.

(Do not confuse this with Soxtober.  That would be watching the White Sox in the baseball playoffs…that is almost funny to say)

Lightspeed Systems Weekly Student Online Activity Report

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As a part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring a safe and secure online environment for our students, we are excited to announce that we will be offering the Lightspeed Systems Weekly Student Online Activity Report to all parents and guardians of our school community.

You will receive an email from District 96 that will enable you to register for the Weekly Student Online Activity Report. Once you receive the email from our school district you will have the ability to register. Simply choose to register and follow the prompts to sign up for the Weekly Student Online Activity Report.

The Lightspeed Systems Weekly Student Online Activity Report is a valuable tool that will allow you to gain insights into your child's web history while using the school's iPad. This report will provide an overview of the websites visited by your child while using the iPad. The report is designed to promote transparency and communication between parents and the school, fostering a safer digital learning experience for our students.

The weekly activity report is only accessible to parents and guardians registered for this service. It will not be shared with any external parties, and the data collected will be used solely for the purpose of improving the online safety measures at our school. Parents/guardians will not start begin receiving weekly reports until their child has at least a week's worth of browsing data.

Lightspeed Parent/Student Enrollment Email Schedule: Families will begin to receive LightSpeed Parent report emails from Lightspeed. This email correspondence will allow you to enroll and begin receiving your child’s reports from Lightspeed for the following grades on or near the following dates below.

Halloween at Woodlawn

We allow our students to dress up at school for Halloween.  We require that costumes are school appropriate, meaning no blood and guts, anything with a weapon or something that doesn’t meet our dress code.  We also ask that students do not wear masks because they restrict the vision of students and we do not want them to fall.

Finally, there has been a long standing tradition in the Grana family that goes back forever.  No matter what, you pick up family members from the airport.  No questions asked, it doesn't matter which airport, (although O’Hare is preferred), you pick up any family member who asks you.  Doesn’t matter the time or place, and if you cannot do it, you find someone else to take your place.  85 year old aunt who lives in Lake in the Hills, no sweat.  Nephew and his wife coming home from a cruise, “I’ve got you”.  It is just what we do.  Because of this loyalty to each other, I have learned that it is in the arrival and departure pick up lines where I have come to the belief that I would be an amazing NASCAR driver.  Living where we do, when the plane touches down, the person on the plane texts to say “Landed!” From there, you run to your car, hop on the expressway and zip in and out of traffic, trying to set land speed records.  The true test comes when you are approaching your terminal.  Being three or four lanes over, the skill set of cutting across those lanes and getting to your pit stop (the people you are picking up), takes incredible skill and desire.  Once you are gassed up (bags & people in the car), You immediately pull back out into traffic at full speed, trying to avoid the angry security personnel and streaking cars, coming at you from every direction.  I should paint a #27 on the side of my car and get sponsored by Callaway Golf, Carmello candy bars and Woodlawn Middle School.  I can see this dream coming true…

Have a great weekend.
