Woodlawn Principal's Blog 10/13/23

Another quick week here at Woodlawn.  I hope you are enjoying your Friday the 13th!  I am proud of the staff and students, working hard and making progress.  I started thinking about this group of 8th graders and how soon they will be looking ahead toward next year and becoming high school freshmen.  This is a really nice group of 8th graders and they have really stepped up their game this year.  Just a few items for the blog this week.

Picture Day - Retake Day - Wednesday, October 18, 2023

If you would like your child to have their school picture retaken, please click on the Color Portraits website and put in our School Code Event number.  Pictures will be retaken early in the day on October 18th.  Students must bring the school pictures they received a few weeks ago  back to Woodlawn if they are doing the retakes.

Safety Drill

On October 20th, Woodlawn will be conducting a Law Enforcement Safety Drill. Students will be evacuating the building during the drill. If the weather does not cooperate, we will reschedule the drill and communicate the rescheduled drill date.

In compliance with the Safety Drill Act, parents have the right to exempt their child from the Law Enforcement Drill.

If you do not wish your child to participate in the Law Enforcement Safety Drill, please contact Greg Grana at [email protected].  The administration will arrange for an alternative review of safety procedures with your child.

If we do not hear from you, we will assume your child has permission to participate in the drill.

Lake County STEM for Girls Conference

We are excited to share that the Lake County STEM for Girls Conference is back!  The conference hosts women from various STEM fields who work with the attending students by engaging in hands-on activities with real-world applications. Each session is interactive and inspiring! Girls in grades 6th-8th are invited to attend.

We have a STEM fair (with lots of goodies) and also invite parents/guardians to attend adult sessions to learn more about saving for college, how to support students in high school academic paths and mindfulness. We have a fantastic keynote and an enthusiastic closing for both students and parents!

This year the conference is being held at Vernon Hills High School on November 4th, 2023.   We've attached a flyer to this email and can't wait to hear how it goes when your child attends.

Registration is open!

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

Finally, sometimes, things just work out without even trying.  I had an idea on Tuesday about my blog where I was going to write about the small things in life that you take pleasure in.  It may seem silly to other people but in your universe, it is something that you enjoy.  Ironically, I went to our administrator meeting on Thursday and our warm up activity was basically the same thing.  We talked about the little things in life that you tend to treasure.  Here are a few of my favorite things:

  • When I cut the grass and it rains right after.
  • Now that my children are older, getting dinner with all of us together is amazing That happened Thursday night.
  • Hitting the find my phone on an Apple watch.  Gold.
  • Football Sunday’s in my basement.
  • Finding money in an old coat.
  • Free movie weekends from HBO.
  • A solid nap, especially on a rainy day.
  • When you think about a buddy and you get a text message from that person in the same instant.

Think about your favorite moments and ask your family about them.  You might be surprised by what they tell you.

Have a great weekend.
