Woodlawn Principal's Blog 10/6/23

10/6/23

Happy Friday Woodlawn!  Things were great here this week as our musical students continue to practice, soccer, girls basketball and cross country are in full swing.  Our students are rocking it.  We are running into that time of year when one day it is warm and then the weather turns.  Make sure your child is ready for any kind of weather, day by day!

An Update From Mr. Grana

I have been having a few conversations with parents about middle school behaviors and things that students say or do that make you scratch your head.  As a school, we talked about being part of a community at the beginning of the year and being respectful of one another.  Please remind your student that there are expected behaviors with both words and actions that they are responsible for following.  I love this age level and have worked with 11 to 14 year olds for the vast majority of my 34 year teaching/administrative career and will continue to believe in each child because they are special.  Sometimes, we must have conversations that make them realize that the topics or words they are using are toxic and need to be addressed.  As I said on curriculum night, when I talk to a student, I will do it with respect and understanding but a serious tone.  Thanks for your support.

Lake County STEM for Girls Conference

We are excited to share that the Lake County STEM for Girls Conference is back!  The conference hosts women from various STEM fields who work with the attending students by engaging in hands-on activities with real-world applications. Each session is interactive and inspiring! Girls in grades 6th-8th are invited to attend.

We have a STEM fair (with lots of goodies) and also invite parents/guardians to attend adult sessions to learn more about saving for college, how to support students in high school academic paths and mindfulness. We have a fantastic keynote and an enthusiastic closing for both students and parents!

This year the conference is being held at Vernon Hills High School on November 4th, 2023.   We've attached a flyer to this email and can't wait to hear how it goes when your child attends.

Registration is open!

If you have any questions, please contact [email protected].

Finally, every once in a while I get busted for listening to one of my guilty pleasure songs.  When I am either at home alone or here at Woodlawn late for sporting events and no one is around, I will turn my music choices up and enjoy some tunes.  Usually, no one comes into the office but occasionally, the stars will align and someone will walk in  while I am listening to a song that will cost me a punch in my man card.  Here is a list of some of my favorite guilty pleasure songs that I really should not admit to the world:

10. Hold On - by Wilson Phillips (amazing harmony)

9.  Since You’ve Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson (I hit that high note with Kelly)

8.  Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley (It is Rick - enough said)

7.  I Want It That Way - The Backstreet Boys (The boys and I just belting it out)

6.  Fergalicious - Fergie (Just fun stuff)

5.  MMMBop - Hanson (Love that MMMBop)

4.  Waterloo - Abba  (The best ABBA song)

3.  Barbie Girl - Aqua (Making a comeback with the movie and all)

2.  Party in the U.S.A. - Miley Cyrus (My youngest daughter and I still dance to this)

And still champion -

Amerian Girl - Tom Petty (The best!)

Feel free to ask Alexa to play any of these and I dare you not to get pumped up!

Have a great weekend!
