Woodlawn Principal's Blog 8/18/23

We are off to a great start to the 2023-24 school year!  It was so refreshing to see our students returning, ready and eager to get to know their classmates and teachers.  I was ready to be done with the preparation for school and needed to see the young eager faces of our students. Personally, I was really excited to see how much our 7th & 8th graders have grown and matured.  Simply incredible.  There are a few items to read in the blog this week.

Woodlawn Musical

Woodlawn's fall musical is holding auditions NEXT WEEK for the production of The Sound of Music! 6th, 7th, and 8th graders are welcomed and encouraged to audition. Some students will additionally be requested to attend a "callback" audition on Wednesday, August 23.

.Cell Phones

Cell phones should be securely locked in the student’s lockers from 7:45 AM-2:30p.m.

We are asking that all students have their cell phones silenced and locked in their lockers from 7:45a.m. to 2:30p.m.

If a staff member sees a cell phone out, we will ask the student to lock it in their locker. If they do not comply, the phone will be taken and sent to the office until the end of the day. Students can collect their cell phones from the office at 2:30p.m.

Thank you so much for your support on this.  We want to keep the focus on learning and away from the phones.

Welcome Back Assembly

We had an amazing back to school assembly this morning.  The students were incredible.  I am so proud of them as we talked about our direction for the school year.   I will share more information with parents on curriculum night.

PTO Message

Thank you for coming to locker setup day. If you have not ordered your child’s gym clothes, it’s not too late.  You can still order on MTK (https://woodlawnmspto.membershiptoolkit.com) and they will be delivered to your child in gym class.

The Woodlawn PTO is still working on dessert day and special lunch.  We are evaluating the options set forth by the District. We will notify everyone as soon as we know how we are going to move forward.

Please contact Dana Mills at [email protected] with any questions.

Finally, I love a good metaphor.  Slipping it into my writing or during a conversation to make a point is fun and can be powerful.  The problem that I run into is that I get excited and start combining my metaphors.  There is actually a name for this that I just learned about.  A malapropism or eggcorn is the combining of two metaphors.  Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Don’t judge a book before it is hatched.
  • I can read him like the back of my book.
  • I have a lot of black sheep in my closet.
  • It will be a walk in the cake.
  • We can stand here and talk until the cows turn blue.
  • You can’t teach a leopard new spots.
  • Let’s put the elephant on the table here.
  • It’s not rocket surgery.
  • Don’t bite a gift horse in the mouth.
  • He’s not the sharpest cookie in the jar.

I hope that you enjoyed those malapropisms!

**Interesting side story about the Sound of Music since that is our musical this year…In 1989 I began my career as a substitute teacher.  I was at an all boys school and was in charge of a senior homeroom.  An announcement came over the intercom system asking for the cast of the Sound of Music to come down to the auditorium. From the back corner of the room, a group of boys stood up in unison and started walking toward the door.  I felt that something was fishy about this and met the crew at the door.  I asked the ringleader who he was playing in the musical.  He responded with, “Professor Von Trapp.”  At 25 years old, I had to think about this but quickly remembered that he was in the navy and replied, “No way, he was a Captain.  Go sit down.”  The entire group turned around and went back to their seats. Instant respect.

Have a great weekend.
