Woodlawn Principal's Blog 8/11/23

We are almost at the start of the school year!  Here we go!  I look forward to seeing everyone at locker set up on Wednesday and having all the students come on Thursday of this week.  The energy that the students bring into the building is incredible.  The beginning of the year makes me smile because I can see how much our 8th graders have grown and how excited our 6th graders are to be here.  The magic starts this week!

Calendar

HERE is the D96 Calendar for the 23-24 school year.

Cell Phones

Parents, we ask that student cell phones should be securely locked in the student’s lockers from 7:45a.m.-2:30p.m.

We are asking that all students have their cell phones silenced and locked in their lockers from 7:45a.m. until 2:30p.m.  If a teacher would like your student to bring their phone to class, they will advertise it to the class in advance.  If a staff member sees a cell phone out, we will ask the student to lock it in their locker. If they do not comply, the phone will be taken and sent to the office until the end of the day. Students can collect their cell phones from the office at 2:30p.m. Thank you for your support with this policy.

Here is the official blurb from the handbook:

Please see language from the D96 Board Policy Manual:

Arrival and Dismissal  Procedures for Parent Drop Off

Parents, it is essential that you follow the rules for our parking lot drop off and pick up.  I understand that you may need to get to work or that you are running late, but we all have to make the system work in order to keep students and staff safe.  Please follow the following rules:

  • When dropping off or picking up your student, stay in a single file line as seen in the diagram below.
  • Do NOT cut through the aisles or drop your child off in the parking lot aisles.  This is dangerous for students and teachers alike.  See the red block areas noted.
  • Pull up as far as you can and have the students ready to get out of the car quickly.  We have a long line of people trying to drop off their student so we have to be efficient.
  • Do NOT drop off in the bus lot or the Country Meadows lot.
  • Stay in a single file line and do not double up  lanes.
  • Be courteous to each other.

Activity Bus Dismissal Procedure

Starting on Monday, August 21st  the Woodlawn Activity Bus routes will begin.

Finally, We had our district wide, new teachers training this week.  This week is always special for me to be a part of as it is great to see how much energy the new staff has and how impressed they are with the way D96 is run.  I am very happy with all of our new teachers and welcome them to this incredible school.

I recently was made aware of an issue we have in our house.  Our DVR is over 90 percent full.  We have movies, old sporting events (including the 2017 Superbowl, comedies, mini-series, and every other thing you can think of).  The DVR gives you a heads up that there are a lot of shows in your queue and I cannot help but to detect a little frustration from the message the DVR gives you.  “You are at 92% capacity on your DVR storage.  If you do not delete some items, you will not be able to store anymore items.”  As I was digging through the hundreds of hours of shows, I realized that one of my children recorded the entire library of “Hoarders” episodes.  Since there are over 80 episodes,  I have to ask this question.  Does one of my children have a hoarding of Hoarders problem?  It seems as though they do.  The only thing that Hoarders does for me is that it gives me a sense that I am managing pretty well in life compared to some others.  You are now caught on my weekend plan to purge old shows.  I live a Fast and Furious life…FYI, only five of the 10 Fast and Furious movies are on my queue. I have some work to do.
