Woodlawn Principal's Blog 6/2/23

It amazes me how quickly a school year can go by.  Graduation was really nice for out 8th grade students who looked so mature.  I am excited about next year and will be trying to rest up this summer.  This is the last blog of the school year, so I hope you tune me in again in August.

Graduation Pictures

Here is a link to some graduation pictures taken on Tuesday night.

The 2023 Woodlawn Track and Field team wrapped their season with 3 athletes representing the team at the IESA 4A State Finals at the Easide Centre in East Peoria, IL. This was a two day event on Friday and Saturday, May 19th and 20th. "This year's state meet was one of the most talented meets I've ever attended." said Mr. Berry. The 4000 plus spectators in attendance got quite a show over the two days, as many all time state records were broken throughout the meet.

8th grader, Quinten Wang, qualified for the 400m. He finished two spots above his seeded place with a PR run of  57.89 seconds.

8th grader, Connor Kenning, made his way onto the podium in shot put. Connor threw a shot 42' 3" to finish in 8th place among the State's best.

7th grader, Tessa Tinge, was very busy during the two day event. She was the Sectional champion in the 100m, 200m, and 400m dash, which meant she qualified for all 3 events at State. She was running back and forth from the track to the podium, as she placed in ALL THREE EVENTS! Tessa took 8th place in the 100m dash (13.10) and 6th in the 200m (27.43) and 400m (1:02.84).

Congratulations to all participants and team members on a successful season!!

Report Cards

Trimester 3 report cards will be available on TeacherEase (School Insight) at 3:00 pm on Monday, June 5th.

REFUND OF 8th GRADERS’ POSITIVE MEAL ACCOUNT BALANCES

Positive meal account balances for graduating 8th graders of $5 or more will automatically be refunded at the conclusion of the school year. Parents wishing to transfer remaining balances to siblings still in D96 on the K12PaymentCenter.com should do so by Friday, June 2nd.  Refund checks will be mailed by District Business Office staff Wednesday, June 14th, to the home address on record.

Summer Reading

This summer, we want students to experience the pure joy of reading. Since the purpose of summer reading is to help foster a love of reading, we strongly feel that students should read a book that is of high interest to them and close to the difficulty level of text they would encounter during the school year.

Incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will be completing a summer reading assignment. This assignment will be shared in current 5th-grade, 6th-grade, and 7th-grade classes. This assignment contains two parts: (1) Read a book! (2) Write a letter to your next year’s language arts teacher.  The assignment is available on the district website.

End-of-Year Technology Information

Aside from a few exceptions (defined below) all students will KEEP their District 96 technology (iPad, iPad Case, Charging Cable, Charging Brick, and Logitech Crayon) over the summer and will be expected to return with it at the beginning of the 23-24 school year. It will be the student’s responsibility to come to school next year with all of their technology items. Should parents have technology-related questions over the summer, they can get a hold of us at [email protected]

Exceptions:

  • All EC student iPads at Willow Grove will be collected at the end of the school year. We will redeploy class sets at the start of the 23-24 school year.
  • All 8th-grade student iPads will be collected on the morning of Wednesday, May 24th at both middle schools.
  • Any student who is confirmed not returning to District 96 for the 23-24 school year will need to turn in their technology items on the last day of school.
  • Any student who unenrolls from District 96 (during the school year or during the summer) is required to turn in their technology items as soon as possible after they confirm unenrollment, even if families indicate they are planning to return at a later date, District 96 technology items should be collected.

Finally, another school year is in the books.  I cannot help to get melancholy when thinking about the students who are moving on and how much I have seen the 6th & 7th graders grow.  We had a visit from the Country Meadows and Kildeer 5th graders and boy oh boy, they looked young.  I cannot thank the Woodlawn staff and community for the incredible work that was done this year.  We are already planning for the 23-24 school year and I hope you tune into my blog again next year.
