Woodlawn Principal's Blog 5/26/23

The last day for 8th graders is always a tough one for me.  Regardless of who they are, I think about where they were when they entered Woodlawn and where they are going as they move on through high school and beyond. On a separate note, next week will be the last Principal’s Message of the year.  Ugh!

Upcoming Dates:

No School - Monday, May 29th.

8th Grade Graduation will be at 5:30p.m. on Tuesday, May 30th.

Last day of school for 6th and 7th grade - Friday, June 2nd. This is a half day and students will be dismissed at 11:10a.m.

Congratulations to our Woodlawn Wolves of the Month for the month of May!

Summer Reading

This summer, we want students to experience the pure joy of reading. Since the purpose of summer reading is to help foster a love of reading, we strongly feel that students should read a book that is of high interest to them and close to the difficulty level of text they would encounter during the school year.

Incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will be completing a summer reading assignment. This assignment will be shared in current 5th-grade, 6th-grade, and 7th-grade classes. This assignment contains two parts: (1) Read a book! (2) Write a letter to your next year’s language arts teacher.  The assignment is available on the district website

End-of-Year Technology Information

Aside from a few exceptions (defined below) all students will KEEP their District 96 technology (iPad, iPad Case, Charging Cable, Charging Brick, and Logitech Crayon) over the summer and will be expected to return with it at the beginning of the 23-24 school year. It will be the student’s responsibility to come to school next year with all of their technology items. Should parents have technology-related questions over the summer, they can get a hold of us at [email protected]

Exceptions:

  • All EC student iPads at Willow Grove will be collected at the end of the school year. We will redeploy class sets at the start of the 23-24 school year.
  • All 8th-grade student iPads will be collected on the morning of Wednesday, May 24th at both middle schools.
  • Any student who is confirmed not returning to District 96 for the 23-24 school year will need to turn in their technology items on the last day of school.
  • Any student who unenrolls from District 96 (during the school year or during the summer) is required to turn in their technology items as soon as possible after they confirm unenrollment, even if families indicate they are planning to return at a later date, District 96 technology items should be collected.

Finally, I am generally a patient person who is loving of most living things…(exclude mice from that because of a tough experience in a nasty apartment while in college).  The town I live in is a fine town.  We have very good high schools, an excellent park district, decent people and good services.  The house I bought 13 years ago is on the very edge of my town and my backyard is the dividing line between my town and an unincorporated part of my town. It has never been a problem until just recently.  Late in the fall, on the opposite side of my backyard neighbor, a house sold and yard renovations started almost immediately.  This spring I noticed a chicken coop go up in the distance.  I really hadn’t put much thought into this until the weather recently turned nice and we decided to crack the window at night.  Here is the problem…the people two houses down, who I have never met, now have a rooster.  A rooster.  So this rooster has decided to start his daily “call” at around 4a.m.  Now my previous experience with a rooster has been on television, usually a show of some sort where they show the rooster calling once and then the show breaks away to the action.  Not in real life.  In reality, the rooster continues to call, and call, and call, and call.  It is mind numbing.  My issue is that in an unincorporated town, it is like the wild west.  Anything goes.  I have no recourse.  Day 1 was amusing, whereas day 2 was more frustrating and day 5 was infuriating.  I am currently waking up at 2am. in anticipation of the rooster starting his day and I cannot fall back asleep.  I am getting to the point where I am starting to plan my revenge on this demon bird as the world just isn’t big enough for the two of us.  If I snap before next Friday, I will let you know.  It is possible you will hear about this on the news as well…
