2023 Middle School Principals' Message - Summer Reading

Summer Reading

This summer, we want students to experience the pure joy of reading. Since the purpose of summer reading is to help foster a love of reading, we strongly feel that students should read a book that is of high interest to them and close to the difficulty level of text they would encounter during the school year.

Incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will be completing a summer reading assignment. This assignment will be shared in current 5th grade, 6th grade, and 7th grade classes. This assignment contains two parts: (1) Read a book! (2) Write a letter to your next year’s language arts teacher.  The assignment is available on the district website.

End-of-Year Technology Information

Aside from a few exceptions (defined below) all students will KEEP their District 96 technology (iPad, iPad Case, Charging Cable, Charging Brick, and Logitech Crayon) over the summer and will be expected to return with it at the beginning of the 23-24 school year. It will be the student’s responsibility to come to school next year with all of their technology items. Should parents have technology-related questions over the summer, they can get a hold of us at [email protected]

Exceptions:

  • All EC student iPads at Willow Grove will be collected at the end of the school year. We will redeploy class sets at the start of the 23-24 school year.
  • All 8th-grade student iPads will be collected on the morning of Wednesday, May 24th at both middle schools.
  • Any student who is confirmed not returning to District 96 for the 23-24 school year will need to turn in their technology items on the last day of school.
  • Any student who unenrolls from District 96 (during the school year or during the summer) is required to turn in their technology items as soon as possible after they confirm unenrollment, even if families indicate they are planning to return at a later date, District 96 technology items should be collected.

Thank you to the PTO for the wonderful lunch that was provided to all of our students yesterday.  It was a special treat for everyone and just another example of how amazing our PTO really is!

Talent Show

This past Monday, the Woodlawn Talent Show was on display in our gym.  Our students did a great job of dancing, singing, playing the piano, violin, and even telling jokes.  I had the best time watching our students perform and show off their skills!  Here is a picture of the entire group.

Finally, watching the talent show and being asked to help kick off the festivities, it made me reminisce about some of my favorite dad jokes.  Yes, the always reliable “why is six afraid of seven?” (because seven, eight (ate), nine), was a staple in my house, but I also had a bunch of go to jokes.  We used to visit Iowa quite often to see my wife’s grandmother.  Sure as could be, we would come across a truck that was loaded up with hay, so in the quiet car and in an excited voice, I would point at the truck and say, “HAY (hey)!  My kids would look and then cringe, knowing that I got them again.  Today, you get some top notch dad jokes to use at will.  Regardless of age, these are going to work on anyone under 92 years old.

  • Where did the general keep his armies?  Up his sleevies.
  • I was going to tell my pizza joke but I think it’s a bit too cheesy.
  • How do pickles celebrate their birthdays?  They relish the moment.
  • Where do sheep get their hair cut?  At the baa baa shop.
  • What do you call a confused cat?  Purrrrplexed.
  • Who is the head of the cheese mafia?  The Goudafather.
  • The numbers 19 and 20 got into a fight.   21.
  • Did you hear about the restaurant on the moon?  Great food but no atmosphere.
  • What happens when frogs park illegally?  They get toad.
  • Why did the golfer change his pants?  Because he got a hole in one.
  • What’s the difference between a well-dressed man on a unicycle and a poorly dressed man on a bicycle?  Attire.
  • I was crushed by a pile of falling books the other day.  I guess I only have my shelf to blame.
