Woodlawn Principal's Blog 5/12/23

5/12/23

This week was teacher appreciation week.  Thank you to our amazing PTO for spoiling the staff with lunch, a coffee bar and treats.  The support of our parents and this outstanding PTO is a vital part of our success.  Thank you again for your support.

If you would like to send a note of appreciation to a teacher, here is the link to the Woodlawn staff.

Happy Mother's Day

I wish a Happy Mother's Day to all of our Woodlawn mom's out there.  Like myself, if your mom has passed, it is still a great day to reminisce.

PTO Lunch

We had an outstanding final special lunch today.  Thank you for all that you have doe for the Woodlawn student all year.

NEW *MAP Reports*

Spring MAP Reports will be sent home on Monday, May 15th.

End-of-Year Technology Information

Aside from a few exceptions (defined below) all students will KEEP their District 96 technology (iPad, iPad Case, Charging Cable, Charging Brick, and Logitech Crayon) over the summer and will be expected to return with it at the beginning of the 23-24 school year. It will be the student’s responsibility to come to school next year with all of their technology items. Should parents have technology-related questions over the summer, they can get a hold of us at [email protected]

Exceptions:

  • All EC student iPads at Willow Grove will be collected at the end of the school year. We will redeploy class sets at the start of the 23-24 school year.
  • All 8th-grade student iPads will be collected on the morning of Wednesday, May 24th at both middle schools.
  • Any student who is confirmed not returning to District 96 for the 23-24 school year will need to turn in their technology items on the last day of school.
  • Any student who unenrolls from District 96 (during the school year or during the summer) is required to turn in their technology items as soon as possible after they confirm unenrollment, even if families indicate they are planning to return at a later date, District 96 technology items should be collected.

District Track Meet

Thank you to all of our parent and teacher volunteers who made the conference track meet a rousing success.  The Woodlawn grounds were used to host the meet and the students from all of the feeder schools into Stevenson were represented.  Our amazing PTO once again ran a concession stand and supplied hundreds of people with heart healthy treats.  Best of luck to all of our athletes who will be participating in the sectional this Saturday.

Finally, I am not sure that this is a me thing or an everyone thing, but the self check out line at the grocery store or Target has me second guessing myself.  Since the stores have cut way back on humans checking out other humans on the conveyor belt, which by the way has been wildly popular since the beginning of time, I feel as though I am being judged by the person that monitors four stations at once.  This superhuman that clearly out performed the other three former check out people to hold onto their job, gives me a stare down from the moment I approach one of the checkouts. When that light pops on above the station and before I can take a step, this all star of the check out world is telling me where to go.  Immediately, we are off to a poor start.  I really struggle when two spots open up at the same time.  I have the uncanny ability to go to the opposite check out spot where the MVP of check out talent is telling me to go.  Now it is time to start beeping in my purchases (this is where it starts going sideways on me).  I go into any store with the intention of buying one or two items so no cart is needed.  Unfortunately, I am a sap for a sale, so before long, I am walking through the aisles with my arms full of stuff I had not intent on buying.  It quickly becomes a balancing act that, with a humble brag, I am exceptional at.  I can hold a number of items that in the old days would get plopped onto the rotating black belt.  This new self checkout  creates an issue.  After waiting behind 10 other people, I now have to make way over and start the self checkout process.  Feeling the weight of the master check out person as their eyes stare through the back of my head, knowing that they are disgusted with my approach, I wave the first item over the scanner that I have dangling precariously from my free hand.  Beep.  Success.  Now I have to get it into the bag.  Setting the item down, I do a squat type of exercise in order to free the plastic bag and get item number one into said bag.  My free hand now reaches up and grabs the Mother’s Day card.  Beep, and drop it into the bag.  At this point, the mechanical demon known as the check out machine, says to me in a very terse voice, “Please place the item into the bagging area.”  This clearly draws the attention of the check out guardian, who strolls over, hits a button on the demon and offers me assistance.  “Nope, I am good.”  As the 17 year old strolls back to his post, I continue this balancing act until I have finished, one painful item at a time.  Noting that the other stations are rolling through normal customers at a much faster rate, the 17 year old is standing near me and I am quite sure, shrugging his shoulders at the never ending line of customers, sending the message that I am hopeless.  Once I get to the last item and it is time to pay, I run my shopper card through, get out my credit card and find that my chip does not want to sync with their machine.  After a number of beeps, I resort to swiping my card, getting my receipt and having one last stare down with a kid who thinks that I should retire to Florida.  I miss the old days when my only dilemma was do I want to buy Tic Tacs or not on my way out.
