Woodlawn Principal's Blog 4/14/23

4/14/23

What a beautiful week!  The weather was amazing, we had outdoor track practice, our boy's volleyball teams had games and the grass is getting greener on our side of the fence.  I am excited about having a beautiful weekend ahead.  I hope everyone gets out at some point tomorrow for a good walk.  I will do my part to get you outside and keep the blog short this week.

There is a half day of school on Friday, April 21st. Students will be dismissed at 11:10 AM.

NEW *Illinois Science Assessment (ISA)*

Students in grades 5 and 8 take the Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) each spring. This year the district will be administering the ISA to students in grades 5 and 8 in the mornings on Tuesday, April 18th through Thursday, April 20th.

Proof of Dental Exam

Dear Parents/Guardians of District 96 Kindergarteners, 2nd, and 6th Grade Students:

Please note that your child’s completed dental examination is now due, per Illinois school law. The deadline for the dental examination is due no later than May 15 of the current school year. Proof of this required dental examination must have been completed within eighteen months prior to the May 15 deadline.

If you haven’t already done so, please make an appointment with your child’s dentist for a dental examination, have him and/or her complete the required form and return it to your child’s school nurse. This examination can be as old as November 15, 2021.

State of Illinois Proof of Dental Examination Form

In the event that you are unable to fulfill this requirement, the state of Illinois does permit a waiver of the examination.

Thank you for your prompt cooperation.

Richard Hite -Art of Inspiration

We had an outstanding assembly on Wednesday when Mr. Richard Hite presented to our students.  His message to the Woodlawn student body was for them to find their talent, that everyone is special and each of them is unique.  He shared stories and created very cool artwork.  Thank you to our PTO and the Cultural Arts Committee for this presentation.

Finally, I have been telling a lot of silly stories over the last couple of weeks. If you remember a few weeks back, I talked about animal attacks and how to avoid them.  Well, it happened again.  A man reported a hippo attack where he was waist-deep in a hippo’s mouth.  I cannot for the life of me understand how this happened.  Follow this advice from experts who said the following on how to stay out of the mouth of a hippo:

  • Don’t get close (duh)
  • Use binoculars (solid advice-and if you look deeper, it means stay far away)
  • Stay in your vehicle (I would make sure it is gassed up)
  • Do not approach from behind (goes for any wild animal-see bear, cougar, lion, skunk)
  • Make noise (this will allow the hippo to know you are a fool and approaching at the same time)
  • A yawning hippo = an angry hippo (it does not indicate that it wants to play a game of hungry, hungry, hippos)

If experts have to come out with these lists, we are doomed as humans.

On an inspiring note, I interviewed AP candidates this week.  There were a few top-quality candidates that are currently D96 staff from other buildings.  When it came time for the candidates to ask questions of the panel, each and every one of them asked why the culture at Woodlawn is so strong and if I believed that they would be a good fit.  My answer was simple, it is a team effort.  The staff believes in what we are doing, we are dedicated to our students and the parent's support of our school is outstanding.  We are in a great place once again and our best days are ahead of us.  We continue to have a strong staff and I am so proud of their collaboration.  I am truly blessed to have such amazing teachers, staff, students, and parents that make Woodlawn…well, Woodlawn.

Have the best weekend.
