Woodlawn Principal's Blog 2/17/23

It was another good week here at Woodlawn.  Thursday was interesting as we had an eye on the weather and that is always a challenge when making decisions.  I remember 10 years ago or more when a major snow storm was projected, school was cancelled, and it rained all day.  The following week, it was questionable, with 2-3 inches of snow predicted so school was in session, and we were blasted with snow. Anyways, I am really proud of the work our students are doing in this demanding part of the year and I hope you enjoy the blog this week.

There is no school on Monday, February 20th.

Parking Lot

Ladies and gentleman, I cannot stress this enough…please stay in the drop off lane, have your child ready to jump out and behave yourselves.  There are students, teachers and staff who are walking in the parking lot and when you cut through the lanes, you are endangering people.  Your time is not more important than others.  Leave earlier or stay in the line.  Don’t be that person.

PTO Cultural Arts Assembly

In honor of Black History Month, we had a terrific assembly from the Najwa Dance Corps.  Our students were treated to the perfomance with dancing, drums and a history of the dances presented.  This interactive performace was fun for our students and they were all amazing.

 *5Essentials Survey for Parents/Guardians*

Now that I have irritated some people with the parking lot chastizing, I need everyone else to fill out the parent survey on 5Essentials.  It literally takes a few minutes and it benefits the school and the community.

Beginning January 24 through April 2nd, District 96 invites you to share your thoughts on the inner workings of your child’s school.  On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago.

As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.   Your participation will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide our improvement. Parent identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.

Please visit http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/ to begin the parent survey. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact UChicago Impact Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or [email protected]

Finally, I have worked in education most of my life so I really do not understand the business world.  Fun fact #1 is my son teaches business at an area high school. Fun fact #2 is that my brother started a custom picture framing business in 1976 when he was a senior in high school and like it or not, I was recruited to work with him all through my high school and college days.  I am one of these people who will glance at your artwork, but I am really checking out your framing.  I have some mad skills at picking out mats, glass, and overall picture framing.  Humble brag.  I digress…back to the business world…I get the supply and demand thing but I am concerned for a particular store.  Recently, I went to a department store that consistently hands out 30% coupons.  For whatever reason, I had a 40% off coupon to this same store, plus the bucks they give you from a previous spending spree, and an overall store sale of up to 80% off clearance items and I am in full shopping mode.  I went to town and came up with a ton of stuff for a bargain basement price but then I started to worry about his this place stays in business.  I mean employees, overhead, advertising, equipment, legal fee, insurance premiums, taxes, utilities, etc. (thank you google for telling me what expenses there are in a business), how do they make it work?  Seriously, I cannot imagine how this works.  I cannot worry about it, instead I am going shake my head at the parents who refuse to follow the parking lot rules.

Have a great weekend!
