Woodlawn Principal Blog 1/20/23

1/20/23 <--------- Enjoy 1's, 2's & 3's in the date for the next three days.

Friday is here!  We had a visit from the SHS Fine Arts Department, showing off their drama, band, art, dance, and other skills.  When this starts happening, it reminds me that our 8th graders will be moving on before you know it.  Stevenson High School has so much to offer and this assembly makes it real and allows the students to think about some of the possibilities coming up for them.  Just a couple of repeat items in the blog today…

ACCESS Testing

The State of Illinois requires identified English Learner (EL) students to annually participate in the ACCESS testing to determine current English language proficiency in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Our ACCESS testing window will occur from 1/17-2/22. Each school’s testing schedule is unique and will only impact students who take the ACCESS test. Students taking ACCESS do not need to prepare anything ahead of time.

Finally, I want to start out by saying thank you to my other Yacht Rock radio fans.  I say that the six of us, pile into a station wagon and hit a Little River Band concert at the Arie Crown Theater.  Good times!

I just have a couple of random thoughts this week…I go to the doctor and pay him to insult me.  “Mr. Grana, we need to keep an eye on your weight.”  My first thought is that I try not to keep an eye on my weight…”Your blood pressure is too high and I don’t like the look of that mole.”  I mean, how do you respond to that?  You don’t.  You just pay the fee, and then walk out of the door. So then I start thinking to myself, “Alright, time to eat better.”  I begin looking at the ingredients in things and realize that everything can check out just fine until you get the serving size.  Since it is Girl Scout cookie time of year, I can handle the calories, and fat intake but the serving size is 2 cookies.  What sick human eats only two Thin Mint cookies? My final thought this week is about my toaster.  I always seem to believe that I am able to get something out of my toaster without using an oven mitt.  It is a real-life game of Operation at times. Realizing that I shouldn't be using a fork, I ask you this...have you ever tried to pull a Pop-Tart out of the toaster with your bare hand?  Yet, each and every time, I feel as though I am going to be able to withstand the freshly melted sugar and somehow make that fruit-filled goodness hover all the way to my plate.  And yes, to answer the follow-up question, I eat a Pop-Tart because, in my mind, it is healthy for me. I try to explain that to my doctor, but he just doesn't see my point of view.

Have a good weekend!
