Adlai E. Stevenson High School 2023/2024 Incoming Freshmen Dance Placements

FAQ for Incoming Freshman Dancers

All incoming freshmen can take a dance course. This course may be used in lieu of Physical Education and satisfies the PE credit. (Colleges recognize this as a Fine Arts credit as well.)

What style of Dance is taught at Stevenson High School?

Stevenson Dance is a contemporary-based program.

Which Dance classes are open to freshmen?

Classes open to freshmen include Dance 1, 2, 3 and 4.

How do I know in which level I should enroll?

All incoming freshmen interested in an upper-level dance course (Dance 2, 3 or 4) must attend a placement assessment. The assessments are Wednesday and Thursday, January 25 and January 26, 2022 from 4:15 - 7:30 p.m. Attendance on both days is required.

District families with incoming 2023-24 kindergartners are asked to be on the lookout for pre-registration information being shared in a few weeks.

The 2023-24 Kindergarten pre-registration is open to students who live within District boundaries and who will be 5 years old by Sept. 1, 2023.

This year’s Kindergarten Pre-Registration will be conducted online; parents will be emailed a link to start the process.  (Families needing to pre-register their child in-person may contact Kimberly O’Neill, administrative assistant at Willow Grove Early Learning Center, at [email protected].)

For the online Kindergarten Pre-Registration, parents will need to supply:

  • Proof of their identity
  • Proof of their child’s birth (birth certificate or passport)
  • Proof of District residency (current mortgage, lease or property tax bill)
  • Current utility bill

Incoming Kindergartners who are pre-registered during this Pre-Registration period will receive a special Willow Grove Kindergarten T-shirt. (The T-shirts are not available after this pre-registration period.)

**Repeat Item**
Current Patriot Consortium Mathematics Placement Process

The consortium has created criteria that define the four strands of mathematical proficiency to highlight the attributes of a proficient mathematical thinker. The criteria are grouped into three categories:

  • Procedural Skills & Fluency (How well you can correctly use mathematics.)
  • Conceptual Understanding (How well you utilize mathematical ideas, transfer your knowledge into new situations, and apply it to new contexts.)
  • Problem Solving with Adaptive Reasoning and Strategic Competence (How well you can apply strategies and sound reasoning.)

Over the course of the year, the mathematics teachers will be discussing these criteria with the students in class to create a portrait of each student. This portrait will be used to recommend the students into the mathematics course at Stevenson High School that matches their content knowledge as well as level of mathematics proficiency at this time.

As a district and consortium, it is our vision that each student moves on to the next course in the sequence providing that there are no significant gaps in content knowledge. If there are significant gaps in content knowledge and a change in recommendation occurs, we will contact you. We feel that this process allows a mathematical picture of the student to develop over time, which will provide a more informed recommendation.

Course Sequence for Bridge Algebra 1 Students

-Algebra 1 with Mentor math or Algebra 1 with Math Guided Study will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-4

-Algebra 1 will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-4

Course Sequence for Algebra 1 Students

-Geometry will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-4

-Geometry Accelerated will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-4

Course Sequence for Geometry Students

-Algebra 2 will be recommended if students need to reinforce and refresh targets in Units 1-3

-Algebra 2 Accelerated will be recommended if students have mastered targets in Units 1-3

PORTRAIT OF A MATHEMATICALLY PROFICIENT STUDENT

Procedural Skills & Fluency

How well you can correctly use mathematics.

I can identify and use the most efficient method for the problem. (MP7)

I can use mathematical computations, terms, symbols, formulas, and language appropriately. (MP5, 6)

I can recognize the algebraic structure in problems and use rules or procedures to solve or simplify. (MP7)

I can solve problems with accuracy. (MP6)

Conceptual Understanding

How well you utilize mathematical ideas, transfer your knowledge into new situations, and apply it to new contexts.

(comprehension of mathematical concepts, operations, and relations)

I can use diagrams, pictures, and symbols to justify my work. (MP4)

I can understand and justify the “why” of the procedure. (MP3)

I can justify solutions algebraically, graphically, and numerically. (MP3)

Finally, I went to the eye doctor and I am confused about a number of things.  Let’s begin with the 10-minute delay in the waiting room.  I understand that things happen and there are delays at times.  However, when I walk past each and every room and there isn’t a person to be seen, much like the zombie apocalypse, I wonder what I was waiting on.

At this point, I am ushered into the first of many different rooms.

  • Room number one is the tell me when the farmhouse is in focus.
  • Room number two is the color blind, number in a bubble room.
  • Room number three is here comes a puff of air into your eyeball room.  (I love when you are told not to blink, but you know a puff of something is about to happen. Torture)
  • Room number four is the tell me when the lines are all equal room.
  • Room number five is the click the button when you see a light flash room.  (This one raises my anxiety level to the highest level)

Not sure why you have to move from room to room, but alright, I do what I’m told.  I am thinking of two bigger rooms and you just rotate, but who am I to question things?

Now it is time for the main show…the exam room.  “Read the lowest line you can please”.  In my mind, I want to go to one of two places…while I am waiting for the doc to come in the room, I feel as though I should try to impress her and memorize the line below the letters.  In teeny, tiny letters at the bottom of the chart, “Card made by charts are us, Albuquerque, New Mexico”.  That should do the trick…Or I should just be obnoxious and say, “I am going to take a guess here and call it an E”.  Instead, I struggle with the line below the line I should be reading, hoping to get lucky with 3 of the 5 letters.

Now its time for my favorite part.  The clarity test.  “Which is better, one or two?”  This is where I become the most indecisive person on the face of the earth.  All day long I am making decisions and I do not look back.  Ask me which letters are clearer and I hesitate, like the decision I am about to make is going to impact all of humankind.  So when I have a three-second pause, I feel the irritation of the eye doctor and she repeats herself in a terse tone.  “One or two?”  My answer is perfect if I were a Jeopardy contestant, answering in the form of a question, “Two?” I feel the eye roll of the doctor.  “Three or four?”  I think to myself, “why did we just change numbers?”  The three-second pause happens again and the frustration mounts, “Three or four?”  Ugh!  Just give an answer!  “Three!” I bark out with extreme confidence.  This little game goes on for minutes until you get the final vision decision…”Alright, nothing has changed with your prescription.”

Really?  I couldn’t focus on the barn, not sure I lined up the vertical or horizontal lines, I blinked repeatedly on the puffer test and I still cannot commit to One, Two, Three or Four.  My anxiety is through the roof and I am mentally exhausted.

I cannot wait to do this again a year from now.

On a separate note, I would like to thank those of you who connected with my neighborhood's weirdness. I was surprised to hear how many of you have fun neighbors as well.  I really do like it when people make a connection with me related to my blog topic.

Have a great break!  (It starts next Friday)
