Woodlawn Principal's Blog 11/11/22

11/11/22

Happy Veterans Day!  Thank you to our service men and women and all that they have done to protect our freedom as American citizens.  There is a slide show below with some of our Woodlawn family and friends that played on our TV monitors.

Please click here to see the Woodlawn families and friends who have served in the military.

Today is 11/11/22 and tomorrow is 11/12/22.  I love when the dates are patterns like this.  Just one of those things that makes me happy.

BOOK FAIR - Next Week

The PTO SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR is coming to the Woodlawn Learning Center, November 14th - 18th.  Mark your calendars!

Students can purchase books using eWallet - a pre-pay payment option for students.  Give your child a secure, cash-free way to shop the fair.  Simply create an account, pre-authorize a spending limit and have funds immediately available.  Set up an account for each child through November 17th.

Check out the PTO Blog for more detail on how to set up your eWallet and support Woodlawn!

Community Service Club

The Community Service Club is collecting Halloween candy to donate it to our military members overseas.  If you have any candy that you are willing to donate or want your Woodlawn student to get rid of their candy, send it to us and we will make the day of our military members.

We have been advertising this through the students but it hasn’t taken off just yet.  Shocking.

From Our School Counselor

Dear Families,

We are thankful for you!

As we prepare to take time off from school Wednesday, November 23rd - Friday, November 25th for the Thanksgiving break, we are grateful for everyone who has helped to restore a routine for showing up to school while supporting students and families.

Daily routines are essential for reducing stress and creating a sense of security, especially after the chaotic transitions experienced over the last two years.

As long as your child is healthy, please encourage showing up to class when school is in session. Every day of school is an important opportunity for students to learn as well as connect to peers and their teachers.

We thank:

Our students and their families who do their best to show up to class every day even when it isn’t easy.

Our teachers who have gone above and beyond to help make school a welcoming learning environment where students can thrive.

Our administrators who help us work together to ensure we are healthy and safe, feel a sense of community and experience the excitement of an engaging learning environment.

Our many, many healers and helpers - the support staff and community volunteers who provide the extra hands and attention our children need.

May these days off be restful and healing.

●   If your family or your child needs support, please reach out to our School Counselor Jacqui Jessogne @ [email protected] for help.

●   We look forward to seeing you again when school resumes on Monday, November 28th

Thank you for partnering with us!

Orchestra

Thank you to Liam Cuasay and Aashman Datta, who stepped up last night and truly demonstrated the Woodlawn values of responsibility and kindness by assisting 4th & 5th grade students at the Orchestra Concert.  One of the elementary teachers was unable to be there and these awesome students assisted their younger members.  Way to go!

Finally, when your car doesn’t start, it hits you at your core.  I have never been a “car guy”.  I get the gist of how a car works and my grandfather was the ultimate self taught mechanic.  Unfortunately, much like my father, I know very little about how to fix a car that is broken down.  In fact, I have a hard time even describing what is going wrong with a car.  I’ve stop trying to explain to mechanics the noise my car is making because it just draws a crowd of other mechanics and I feel like they have a good laugh about it after I leave.  Recently, the unexpected happened.  I went out to my car after a long day here and click, click, click…my car would not start.  After that, the car went silent.  This is when the stages of grief kicked in.

Denial:  “This absolutely cannot be happening.  I don’t have time for this and I refuse to accept this is a thing.”

Anger: “What the heck! Why didn’t I get some kind of a warning?  Worthless car!”

Bargaining: “Alright, I am going to let the battery rest and then give it another try. I bet it will work.  It has to work.  I’ll take it in for a good tune up tomorrow if it starts.”

Depression: “This is going to cost me a fortune.  I don’t have time to wait for a tow truck and I guarantee they are going to find a million things wrong with this thing.”

Acceptance: “Looks like I am going to have to do this.  Here we go.”

I have car PTSD from the heap of metal I drove in college.  A 1980 Mercury Cougar that was extremely temperamental.  I am talking about a car that hated the cold and refused to turn over.  I became a master at jumping that beast.  Unfortunately for my children, I supplied them with a beater of a car when they were younger.  I believe that it makes you appreciate a car that works.  Think back to your first car and how it ran or didn’t run…I can honestly say that I have never missed that Cougar.  Anyways...the story has a happy ending.  My car is back and running like a champ.

Have a great weekend!
