Woodlawn Principal's Blog - October 28, 2022

10/28/22

This week was amazing!  The Student Council along with the Catalyst Group sponsored a week full of fun activities.  On Wednesday, our PTO put on our Fall Party where students could go to a card reader/fortune teller, walk through a scary haunted house, get some delicious food, have their picture taken with friends or dance to the music.  350 of my closest, 11-14 friends were with myself and Mrs. Groncki.  It was a great party and one of my best nights as an educator that I can remember.

Student Sense of Belonging Survey (NEW)

In District 96, we believe that feedback from students regarding their perception of the school climate and teacher-student relationships provides valuable input about their sense of belonging. Our school district is committed to providing our students with every opportunity to succeed. Substantial research indicates that supporting students’ social-emotional development improves their readiness to learn, positive classroom engagement, and overall academic performance. As a result, District 96 will administer a student belonging survey to all students EC-8.

Please look at this LETTER that gives more information about the student belonging survey.

These surveys are below for you to look over. If you would like a physical copy, you can also get one from the district office.

Halloween - Monday, October 31st

Halloween Costumes

We allow Halloween costumes to be worn to school on October 31st every year.  I ask the following from the students:

Costumes are school appropriate

No weapons

No blood or gore

No masks

If a teacher asks students to remove a part of their costume, the student complies

  • PARENTS - STUDENTS MUST TAKE THEIR REGULAR BUS HOME AND CANNOT GO ON A BUS WITH OTHER STUDENTS.

Veterans Day

There is still time to send in a picture of a family member, friend or loved one who served in the military.  We will be sharing these on a video at lunch on November 11, 2022.  Thank you to everyone who has turned theirs in already.

Fall Party Pictures

Finally,

Finally, the volunteers around here inspire me.  I am not talking about the Tennessee Volunteers, although today was jersey day and I do like their orange look.  I AM talking about all of the parents who are here helping out with our Fall Party, special lunch, dessert day and every other opportunity to make a difference for this school.  You are all amazing and please know how much you are appreciated for running a haunted house, pizza day, guarding the gym so that food doesn’t go in there, reading fortunes, and just making sure our students are taken care of at every turn.  I have volunteered for things in life, but your positivity and energy bring our events to life.  Thank you for your commitment to all students and know how much you are appreciated.

Finally part 2, each year I wear a football or hockey jersey to the fall party.  It seems festive to me and I am a part of the fun.  This year, my new AP shot down that idea (which I didn’t even consider my jersey wearing being rejected as being allowed) and I was given a new opportunity.  Being that Jessica Groncki comes up with a ton of ideas, I had to shoot down Mr. Potato Head, and Cookie Monster.  I am still in charge here.  In the famous words of Ron Burgandy, “I am kind of a big deal!”**  Anyways, before I knew what had happened, I was a wolf.  Yes, my office is decorated with wolf pictures and posters, but never did I see myself in a wolf costume.  So, I am going to share the wolf picture and realize how little control I really have.  Enjoy.  Secretly, I embraced the furry gloves and the ears.  It was the tail that I could have done without.  Have a great weekend!  Go WOLVES!

**For those of you who do not know me, I do not consider myself a big deal.
