Woodlawn Principal's Blog 9/23/22

Welcome back everyone!  We had a fire drill earlier this week that went very well and we also had our first Dessert Day of the school year.  I hope that everyone enjoys the long weekend.

No School this Monday, September 26th.  - District Holiday

We are excited to invite girls from around the county to participate in the Lake County STEM for Girls Conference on November 5th!  This year, the event is being hosted at Woodlawn and we hope to see MANY of our students.  To register, please visit http://www.lcstemforgirls.com/.  If you are a female who is or has worked in a STEM field, we'd love for you to join us as a presenter, please reach out to [email protected] .   We look forward to welcoming the county into our KCSD96 community :)

Conference Information

Fall Family/Educator Conferences are right around the corner.

The conference dates are Thursday, October 6th from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM and Friday, October 7th from 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM

We will be using Meet the Teacher as an electronic sign up for conferences. A School Messenger email was sent to families on Monday, September 19th at 6:00PM with a link to sign up for conferences.

Conferences will be held virtually using Meet the Teacher’s video conferencing platform unless parents request an in-person conference using the instructions below. After you have scheduled your conferences, you will receive an email from Meet the Teacher with a link you will use to access the video conferences.

6th Grade parents will sign up for one, 10 minute time slot with their child’s 2nd period teacher.

7th Grade parents will sign up for one, 10 minute time slot with their child’s 2nd period teacher.

8th Grade parents will sign up for one, 10 minute time slot with their child’s 4th period teacher.

If parents would like, they will also be able to sign up for a conference with their child’s PE, Health, Exploratory, Spanish teachers, and any related service provider their children see. Access will be limited for Exploratory and Spanish teachers. Exploratory teachers will only be available for students currently in the classes. Spanish teachers will only be available for students in the A Day rotation.

If you are unable to schedule a conference with a specific teacher, please remember that conferences are not the only time to communicate with teachers. Please feel free to reach out any time.

REQUESTING AN IN-PERSON CONFERENCE

If you want to have an in-person conference with the teachers, you must notify the teachers via email by the end of the day on Tuesday, October 4th.

Science Olympiad Tryout Informational Meeting:

If your student is interested in trying out for the Science Olympiad team, please be sure they attend ONE of the informational sessions next week-- Wednesday, 9/28 or Friday, 9/30. Both sessions will be held in Room 810.

Science Olympiad is a fantastic opportunity for students who are passionate about science and engineering to explore different topics, expand their knowledge, and compete against other top schools in the state and country.

Veterans Day - November 11th, 2022

Thank you to everyone who has sent in a picture for our Veterans Day slideshow.   If you have a picture of any military members, family or friends, from any era, please email a copy of the photo to myself <[email protected]> and I will include it on Veterans Day.  Just so you know, I will confirm the email so that you know I received it.

PAC Meeting

This is interesting…each month, I get together with the principal of Stevenson High School and the other middle school principal’s whose school feeds into SHS.  Last week we met and went over freshman data from last year surrounding the classes that were taken, who chose to move up and what their grades were.  At the end, Troy Gobble, SHS principal asked if there was anything else to discuss and the topic of student discipline from last year came up.  Each of the middle schools and Mr. Gobble shared their high level of frustration from the year before surrounding discipline.  It was almost reassuring that this wasn’t solely a Woodlawn or D96 thing.  I am pleased to share that our students are off to a great start this year and there is a much more positive feel in the building with everyone.

Finally, I have a number of close friends who through the years, have spread out throughout the country.  This weekend I am going to visit a high school buddy, a former baseball teammate, who went to Purdue and majored in aeronautical engineering.  Yep, he is a rocket scientist.  Since he is a high school friend, we treat him the same way we treated him in the early 80’s.  As the CEO or COO, whatever he is (my buddies and I are not overly impressed), many people are trying to please him and gain his favor.  My friends and I have no problem reminding him of his true self, the mistakes he has made and his bad haircuts.  I feel that the person who appreciates us keeping it real for him is his wife.  When we give him grief, she just laughs and dare I say, relished our approach with him.  Honestly, he is a good sport about it as well, knowing that we all know way too much about each other.  Until he picks all the boys up in a private jet, he is still just the Milk Man** to us.

Have a great weekend.

If you are celebrating the holiday, I wish you L’shana tova.

**Why was he nicknamed the Milk Man? His dad (one the best men i've ever known), owned a dairy.
