Woodlawn Principal's Blog 8/19/22

8/19/22

Welcome to Friday!  We had a great first full day of school today.  We began with an all school assembly to discuss resetting ourselves and getting back to the purpose and focus of school.  I know that sounds basic, but a lot of things have slipped over the last two years and after talking with the staff, it was time to revisit our priorities as a school. I will talk about this more at curriculum night when I meet with the parents.

Comprehensive Health Education Information *New*

Please take a moment to review the links regarding comprehensive health education at the middle school level. The links include a letter from Superintendent Katie Sheridan regarding the middle school comprehensive health curriculum and access to the middle school health standards.  The letter provides information about the direction the district is taking regarding health education for the 22-23 school year, what students will learn in health in each grade, information regarding opting out of instruction, and how to request a review of the resources used for instruction.

NWEA MAP *New*

All students in grades K-8 will be participating in NWEA MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) assessment on Monday, August 29th and Wednesday, August 31st. The MAP assessment is a normed referenced, computerized adaptive test that helps teachers, parents, and administrators improve learning for all students and make informed decisions to promote a child's academic growth.  Like in previous years, all students will be taking the MAP test in reading and math during the school day.

Chorus *New*

Calling ALL Woodlawn students! If you like to sing and are interested in singing with other students, please join chorus. Chorus meets on Wednesdays from 2:30-3:15 for 7th/8th graders and on Thursdays from 2:30-3:15 for 6th graders. Interested students should fill out the form to be added to the Schoology group.

Erin’s Law *New*

An Illinois law known as Erin’s Law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness/prevention curriculum for Kindergarten through Grade 12.

Kildeer Countryside CCSD 96 researched and observed best practices and programs for delivering this instruction, selecting Be Seen & Heard ©. For more information about this presentation please go to www.victorpacini.com/peace-of-mind-2

The focus of this developmentally appropriate and interactive program is to teach children skills to keep them safe from danger or abuse. Concepts discussed will include distinguishing safe from unsafe touches, safety rules at home and school, saying NO, safe/unsafe secrets, and telling a trusted adult, as well as reinforcing that an adult’s touching him or her is not the child’s fault.

Opt-Out Procedures

The presentation to Woodlawn students will be during the school day on September 14th, 2022. If you prefer that your child does not attend this prevention education session, please submit your written request or your questions to [email protected]

Thank you to the PTO for all of your hard work and effort at Locker Set Up Night.  You rock!  Thanks volunteers!

Finally, with three of my four children out of college and gainfully employed, I have been a part of many conversations recently that make me smile.  Staff are talking about dropping their child off for their first day of Kindergarten or how they have recently graduated to the forward facing car seat.  I am long past those days but think about how happy I was when we stopped having to buckle the car seats, run out to the store because we were low on diapers, host a kid birthday party or make payments on the sets of braces.  (4 kids, 5 sets of braces…)  I think about how we traveled  to far away places so that I could spend hours watching gymnastics,  finally getting to see my daughter perform for five minutes.  When you are going through it, you think that it is never, ever  going to end. Suddenly, they play their last basketball game, or perform in their last play, attend their last awards ceremony and then you throw your last high school graduation party.  In the blink of an eye, you have none of those things to plan for, attend or enjoy.  When you come to this realization,  you think about how fortunate those young parents are and how much they have to look forward to for years to come.  All that being said, I will never miss diapers.  Have a great weekend!
