Woodlawn Principal's Blog 8/12/22

It has been a busy, busy week here at Woodlawn and I fully expect next week to be even busier!  Schedules went out this week and new teachers started their training, while Mrs. Kupsco, Mrs. Groncki and I worked away  here in the office.  The building is looking great thanks to Mr. Goodlow and his crew and the PTO has added some awesome window art throughout the building.  I am so excited to see everyone at locker set up day this Wednesday and have the students ready to start on Thursday.

JOIN  THE WOODLAWN CROSS COUNTRY TEAM!!

Whether you're someone who loves to run or you just want to improve your running skills, the Woodlawn Cross Country is the team for you! All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are allowed to participate. Practices are Mon-Thur, 315-4p.

First practice is Tuesday, August 23rd, 315-4p.

Fill out the parent consent forms and the concussion waiver and turn them into Coach Berry or Coach Frishman before the first day of practice.

Sport Teams

If your student will be participating in a sport this year, you need an updated physical.  Tryouts for fall sports will be within the first week of the school year.  7th and 8th grade parents, please avoid frustration from your student athlete and get your physical updated before school starts.

School Nurse

Our outstanding school nurse, Denise Kaufmann, will be here during locker set up to accept any medications that you need to drop off.  Students are not allowed to carry medications (except for an epi pen) with them at school.

New to the District and Woodlawn? Please read for a parent opportunity

Has your family recently moved to the United States OR are you and your student(s) new to the district?

On Wednesday, August 17th from 4:00-4:30p.m., parents that are new to the district and have students at Woodlawn are invited for a new family orientation.

This is an opportunity for parents to meet the Mrs. Groncki (our Assitant Principal) and myself to  learn about Woodlawn. Please meet in the cafeteria at Woodlawn.

Locker Set Up Day will immediately follow the new family orientation.

Picture Day 2022

Picture Day 2022 will be Wednesday, August 31st.  Personally, I had a curly mop of hair for my 7th grade picture and somehow, that beauty of a picture continues to pop up in my life.

Here is the info from Color Portraits:

Color Portraits uses a prepay site and ordering will be closed at Midnight the day of Picture Day to process the orders. If parents missed prepaying they will have a chance to order pictures with their child's Ticket Code. When placing an order after Picture Day with a Ticket Code a shipping fee will be added on and picture packages will be shipped directly to the home. Ticket Codes will be delivered with the bulk picture package order approximately three weeks post Picture Day.

Dress Code

Just a friendly reminder to parent that our D96 Dress Code will be enforced.  A few years ago, short shorts became popular and now crop tops are all the rage.  Neither of those would be allowed.  For those of you who are wondering, yes, I was an administrator when baggy jeans were a thing for the boys.  Please give this a look:

Dress Code

This is a friendly reminder of the District 96 Standards of Dress from the Parent/Student Handbook.

4.12-e Standards for Student Dress. Students who are appropriately and comfortably dressed are able to focus on schoolwork more effectively. The following guidelines will be enforced by building administrators. Cooperation by parents is appreciated.

1. Dress or appearance that provokes or distracts other students or otherwise causes a disruption to the educational process is prohibited.

2. Shoes must be worn at all times.

3. Clothing, jewelry, or accessories may not have writing or pictures that advertise or advocate alcohol, drugs, tobacco, obscenity, violence, or gang activity.

4. Pants must be worn at the waistline.

5. Hats are allowed on designated hat days only.

6. Half shirts, cropped tops, spaghetti straps, and underwear or sleepwear worn as outerwear are not acceptable.

7. Undergarments should not be visible.

8. With the exception of appropriate jewelry, no chains should be worn.

  • Please note…any student violating the dress code will be asked to change into other clothes or cover up.

Cell Phones

Since the majority of students who attend Woodlawn have a cell phone, this one is more challenging.  If students have them out when they shouldn’t, they get held in the office until the end of the day.  Please check out our cell phone policy.

Cell Phones

Cell phones should be securely locked in the students’ lockers from 7:43 AM-2:30 PM.

We are asking that all students have their cell phones silenced and locked in their lockers from 7:43 AM to 2:30 PM.

If a staff member sees a cell phone out, we will ask the student to lock it in their locker. If they do not comply, the phone will be taken and sent to the office until the end of the day. Students can collect their cell phones from the office at 2:30 PM.

Please see language from the D96 Board Policy Manual:

Using or possessing an electronic paging device. Using a cellular telephone, video recording device, personal digital assistant (PDA), or other electronic device in any manner that disrupts the educational environment, or violates the privacy right of others, including using the device to take photographs in locker rooms or bathrooms, cheat, or otherwise violate student conduct rules. Prohibited conduct specifically includes, without limitation, creating, sending, sharing, viewing, receiving, or possessing an indecent visual depiction of oneself or another person through the use of a computer, electronic communication device, or cellular phone. Unless otherwise banned under this policy or by the Building Principal, all electronic devices must be kept powered-off or silenced and out-of-sight during the regular school day unless: (a) the supervising teacher grants permission; (b) use of the device is provided in a student’s individualized education program (IEP); (c) it is used during the student’s lunch period, or (d) it is needed in an emergency that threatens the safety of students, staff, or other individuals.

Clubs, Activities and Study Halls

Information on our 22-23 clubs, activities, and study halls will be updated on the Woodlawn  Website by August 20th. Activities and Study Halls will start on Monday, August 22nd.

The activity period for clubs, activities and study halls is from 2:30p.m.-3:15p.m.
