Woodlawn Principal Blog 5/27/22

This is the final Principal’s Blog for the 21-22 school year.  I feel your sadness. For the parents of our graduating 8th graders and no longer will have a Woodlawn student, please feel free to continue checking the Woodlawn Principal’s Blog for tomfoolery and hijinx.

REFUND OF 8th GRADERS’ POSITIVE LUNCH ACCOUNT BALANCES
Positive lunch account balances for graduating 8th graders of $5 or more will automatically be refunded at the conclusion of the school year. Parents  wishing to transfer remaining balances to siblings still in D96 on the K12PaymentCenter.com should do so by Friday, June 3rd.  Refund checks will be mailed by District Business Office staff Wednesday, June 15th to the home address on record.

Summer Reading

Incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will be completing a summer reading assignment.  The 5th grade, 6th grade, and 7th grade LA teachers will also be sharing this in class, and the assignment will be posted on the district website.

8th Grade Graduation

Parents, please note that graduation starts at 8p.m. and we ask that you do not arrive at Stevenson until 7:15p.m.  Also, please remember that this is a dignified ceremony.  When Mrs. Garlick is calling the names, do not hoot, hollow or draw attention to your graduate, as it takes away from the other students who are graduating.  Thank you.

COVID Metrics

To stay up-to-date this school year on local metrics, please visit the COVID DASHBOARD for District 96. Our priority remains to keep our students safe and follow guidance from the CDC. If your student is identified as a "close contact", you will be notified individually through the contact tracing process.

Vernon Area Library

Our summer session of the online teen volunteer program will start on June 4 and run through August 7, 2022. More information will be available on our website starting in June: https://guides.vapld.info/teenvolunteers

This program is designed for teens in grades 7-12 and will provide an opportunity to earn volunteer hours from home. Students do not need to fill out applications or go through any training. Teens can volunteer as their schedule allows.

SHS Debate Team

On August 9th and 10th, the SHS Debate Team is hosting a Debate Camp for incoming Freshman to introduce them to the basics of debate and how it’s styled at Stevenson! We believe that this would be a great opportunity for graduating 8th graders to get a feel for Debate at Stevenson, and hopefully encourage them to join debate in order to practice and improve their public speaking and argumentation skills!

If your 8th grader is interested, check out  THIS LINK.

Finally, here I go again with my sports background…the school year is very much like being a part of a sports team.  You all come together at the beginning of the year, new teachers are the rookies and over the next 10 months, you coach a group of individuals, trying to get the most out of them.  There are ups and downs, but you work together in order to be successful.  I saw some great things from our 8th grade class toward the end of the year.  They were respectful and genuinely sad about leaving Woodlawn.  Much like a sports team, when you have a special connection with your teammates, it is hard to leave that group who you have known so well over the last few school years.  As the long time general manager here at Woodlawn, I am really proud of the group of teachers that has been assembled.

I hope that everyone has a great 3 day Memorial Day weekend.
