Woodlawn Principal's Blog 5/20/22

Our 8th grade celebrations began with the bowling party on Wednesday.  It was wonderful to have this 8th grade class together, practicing their bowling skills and celebrating their time at Woodlawn.

Our PTO sponsored Lloyd Bachrach on Thursday.  Lloyd inspired students with his “Yes We Can” presentation, sharing about his life growing up and how to achieve anything they put their minds to.

Summer Reading

Incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will be completing a summer reading assignment.  The 5th grade, 6th grade, and 7th grade LA teachers will also be sharing this in class, and the assignment will be posted on the district website.

4.12-e Standards for Student Dress. Students who are appropriately and comfortably dressed are able to focus on schoolwork more effectively. The following guidelines will be enforced by building administrators. Cooperation by parents is appreciated.

1. Dress or appearance that provokes or distracts other students or otherwise causes a disruption to the educational process is prohibited.

2. Shoes must be worn at all times.

3. Clothing, jewelry, or accessories may not have writing or pictures that advertise or advocate alcohol, drugs, tobacco, obscenity, violence, or gang activity.

4. Pants must be worn at the waistline.

5. Hats are allowed on designated hat days only.

6. Half shirts, cropped tops, spaghetti straps, and underwear or sleepwear worn as outerwear are not acceptable.

7. Undergarments should not be visible.

8. With the exception of appropriate jewelry, no chains should be worn.

Device Collection and Information

8th Grade iPad Collection

8th Grade iPad collection will happen on Wednesday, May 25th. Students will be expected to turn in their iPad (inside of the case), charging cable, charging brick, and Logitech Crayon.

Non-Returning 6th or 7th Grade Students

Any non-returning students in grades 6 and 7 will need to leave their iPad (inside of the case), charging cable, charging brick, and Logitech Crayon, with the building Tech Aide for collection.

Students in Grades K-7

Students in grades K-7 will keep their iPad and all peripherals over the summer unless they are not returning to D96 for the 22-23 school year.

Any non-returning students will need to leave their iPad (inside of the case), charging cable, charging brick, and Logitech Crayon, with the building Tech Aide for collection.

Families who exit out of D96 after the last day of school will need to return all of their technology to the District Office over the summer. Any device not returned will be placed in lost mode and will not function.

Over the summer, some apps and services will continue to work at the student’s 21-22 grade level. Apps and websites like Dreambox, Lexia, Typing Agent, (etc) will be available to use over the summer but are not guaranteed to work at all times. The technology department will only be supporting the use of these apps in ESY or Summer School.

As we get closer to August, we will roll-up student data and new services. Apps will also become available to them relative to their 22-23 grade level

Finally, to my Woodlawn family, I am back.  Technically, I've been back for a few weeks now, but it has been very limited.  I continue to gain strength and improve physically.  I cannot thank the community, staff and students enough for your support.  It is so uplifting when a middle school student comes up to you and genuinely cares about your health.  Thank you to the Woodlawn community from the bottom of my heart for your well wishes and cards.  Our amazing A.P. Mrs. Garlick has proven once again that she will be a great principal at Country Meadows next year.  Thanks Michelle.

Here are some random observations:

Hospitals are a lot like schools.  The people who work in the hospital (staff) get frustrated with questions that patients (students) have.  They tend to answer louder the second, third and fourth time they are answering the same questions.

When you drive downtown every day, you realize that there are people who drive like insane maniacs.  I am talking about bumper to bumper traffic and people switching lanes non stop.  My biggest irritation was the people who would drive on the off ramp or merge lane and pass an additional 15 cars.

Brian Urlacher’s head of hair is fine for one gigantic billboard, but 5 in a row is overkill.  Are you really going to change your mind by the time you get to that 5th billboard?  “You know, my balding head can look like Brian’s gigantic melon of hair.  I’m gonna do it!”

Staying positive can be a challenge at times.  You really need to work at it and keep the faith.

This weekend my youngest son graduates from Marquette.  3 of my 4 kids will be officially off the books.  As a bonus, he is gainfully employed as of June 1st.  Woo hoo.

I am glad to be back.  Have a great weekend.
