Woodlawn Principal's Blog 3/4/22

Friday is upon us.  The temperature will be a balmy 70 degrees tomorrow!  My car is begging me to get the salt of the mats and wipe down the interior. Looks like a good day to do something outside.  Save travels to our 8th graders who are heading to Washington D.C. for the long weekend.  Good luck to the chaperones of those 8th graders.  Back in the day, I did the DC trip a number of times.  Exhausting.

The Woodlawn Wolves are back on the track this Spring!! Track and Field season is right around the corner. Track is a short season, only 5 weeks long. First practice is Monday, March 28th. Track is a great transfer sport. What coach doesn't want a faster, stronger, more explosive athlete?! It's also one of the three sports that we compete in the IESA State Series. Sign Up NOW!.

Drop off parent consent and concussion waiver in the drop box outside Mr. Berry's office in the gym.

Students have been told about the forms for a couple of weeks now and can access information in Schoololgy.   They also had access to hard copies, so check their backpacks!

Girls Volleyball

The 8th grade A volleyball team had two exciting and impressive victories over Twin Groves and Fremont on Wednesday night to take 1st place in the conference tournament. The girls had their best day of volleyball on Wednesday as a team. Their communication, energy, serving, chemistry, hitting, and passing led them to their victories. Coach Logar couldn't be more proud of the growth that they made throughout the season both as a team and as individual players. Congratulations to Leah Stodola, Anna Hughes, Bella Hill, Lillah Hill, Kyla Schneider, Makenna Jacobson, Olivia Spieth, Riley Vogler, Nomin Baterdene, and Jillian Sambor!

5Essentials Survey for Parents!

Parent 5Essentials Survey: Share Your Thoughts About Your Child’s School

Parents and Guardians: KCSD 96 wants to hear from you!

You’re invited to complete the Illinois 5Essentials Parent Survey.  This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school and help school and District leaders better understand the parent/school relationship. This survey is administered on behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education.

The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success include:

Effective Leaders

Collaborative Teachers

Involved Families

Supportive Environments

Ambitious Instruction

To take the survey, please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the “Parent” survey to begin.  Please know that your identity and responses will be kept confidential and will not be connected with your child.  You may submit a survey for each child you have in the district.

The survey closes on March 11.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or [email protected] or Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Jeanne Spiller at [email protected].

Illinois Science Assessment (ISA)

Students in grades 5 and 8 participate in the Illinois Science Assessment. The ISA is aligned to the Illinois Science Learning Standards and is designed to reflect classroom experiences. The ISA consists of three sections that will be administered over three days (March 9-11) during the regular school day.

Dear Parents/Guardians of District 96 Kindergarten, 2nd and Sixth Grade Students:

If you haven’t already done so, please make an appointment with your child’s dentist for a dental examination, have him and/or her complete the required form and return it to your child’s school nurse.

Dress Code- It has to be appropriate for school.  We will be asking students to call you or they will wear their gym uniform.

Finally, I have been known to talk in movie quotes.  Now that we have the plexiglass shield in the front of the office, when I am going to the district office for meetings, I will stop and announce to the office, in true Terminator fashion, “I’ll be back”.  Even if no one laughs or understands what I am doing, it cracks me up.  I really like it when our custodian, Mr. Goodlow, is talking about wiring in the school and I get to ask him if he’s using 220 or 221 voltage like Michael Keaton did in Mr. Mom.  I used to believe that this was a guy thing, but I have learned that many of my female colleagues will also talk in movie quote language.  Below are an number of iconic movie quotes and ones that I have used in conversation.  If I missed any that you use in everyday life, let me know.  ‘Make a game out of this…actor, year, quote…

I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse -Vito Corleone/Marlin Brando -The Godfather -1972

Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore-Dorothy Gale/Judy Garland-Wizard of Oz-1939

Here’s looking at you, kid. - Rick Blaine/Humphry Bogart - Casablanca - 1942

Go ahead, make my day. - Harry Callahan/Clint Eastwood - Dirty Harry - 1983

May the Force be with you - Han Solo/Harrison Ford - Star Wars 1977

You talkin’ to me?  Travis Bickle/Robert DeNiro - Taxi Driver - 1976

What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate - Captain/Strother Martin- Cool Hand Luke-1967

E.T. Phone home - ET/Pat Walsh - E.T. The Extra Terrestrial

They call me Mr. Tibbs - Virgil Tibbs/Sidney Poitier- In the Heat of the Night - 1967

Show me the money! - Rod Tidwell/Cuba Gooding Jr. - Jerry McGuire - 1996

I’m walkin’ here!  I’m walkin’ here! - Ratson Rizzo/Dustin Hoffman - Midnight Cowboy 1969

You can’t handle the truth- Col. Nathan R. Jessup/Jack Nicholson - A Few Good Me- 1992

I’ll have what she’s having - Customer/Estelle Reiner - When Harry Met Sally - 1989

You’re gonna need a bigger boat- Martin Brody/Roy Schneider- Jaws- 1975

Houston, we have a problem- Jim Lovell/Tom Hanks- Apollo 13 - 1995

There’s no crying in baseball - Jimmy Dugan/Tom Hanks- A League of Their Own- 1992

Greed, for a lack of a better word, is good - Gordon Gecko/Michael Douglas- Wall Street-1987

Now that this is done…Surely, this will go down as one of my favorite blogs ever.  Your response would be?  It is one of your favorite blogs, and stop calling me Shirley.  Have a good weekend!
