Woodlawn Principal's Blog 9/18/20

Friday is here and the weekend begins!  If I could have a perfect weather day, it was yesterday.  68-72 degrees during the day and cooler at night.  Awesome!  There are just a few items for the blog this week.

Picture Day & Materials Pick Up

It was wonderful to see people this week for our materials pick up day and picture day.  Everyone was wonderful and it makes me want to have the students back in the building as soon as possible!

Suicide Prevention Month

September is Suicide Prevention Month.  Learning about and understanding the warning signs of depression and suicide are critical, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic and school closure. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for 15-19 year-olds in the United States and the third leading cause of death for 10-14 year-olds (Elyssa’s Mission, 2020). Elyssa’s Mission is an organization that Woodlawn partners with to provide the evidence-based Signs of Suicide (SOS) program to our students in their health classes.

It is vital that we all learn the Warning Signs for depression and suicide. The best way to prevent suicide is to know what to look for and understand how to help someone who may be at-risk.  Parents, for additional information, please click HERE

Congratulations to Sonia Barber

This came across my desk recently and I thought it would be nice to share.  Sonia Barber was the Grand Prize winner in a nationally recognized blog for writing.  Click here to read her story

Finally, I am humbled when people tell me that they enjoy reading the blog.  I have often said that I do it to humor myself because writing a weekly newsletter can be a bit mundane.  Fun little factoid, I was that middle school child who despised writing.  If we were told to write a one page story, that is exactly what the teacher received.  One page and not a word more.  In 2005, I was in my third year of being a principal and writing my weekly blog on Friday morning (flashback - we had to have it ready to be printed and stuffed in backpacks by 3p.m.) was my routine.  My Chicago White Sox clinched the A.L. Central that year and I started writing about how I felt about their success.  Little did I know that they would go on to win the World Series that year.  I continued to write about life from my point of view and here we are today.  In 2005, after the Sox had won it all, I said that I hoped the Cub fans would get to experience the feeling I had.  2020 has had a lot of flaws, however, if the Cubs and Sox meet in the World Series...that would be interesting.  Now you know how this lunacy began.
