Woodlawn Principal's Blog 8/21/20

We have had an outstanding week of preparation for the 2020-21 school year here at Woodlawn.  Our staff members have been working as a team to plan and project what will be the best way to meet the needs of our students.  In previous years,  as a staff, we came together with a purpose as we would head into the school year.  Once the staff was in the building, the students would follow,  bringing a new level of excitement a few days later.  This year may look different, but the purpose remains the same...Focus on our students.  This is a great group of professionals and we are ready!

Distanced Meet the Teacher Day

In our first ever Meet the Teacher Day at the middle school, our families and staff respectfully gathered and kept appropriate space in order to have a distanced conversation with our students.  I thought it was a great way to get everyone excited about the school year and put us all in the right frame of mind.

Middle School Half-Day Remote Learning Schedule

Attendance

Attendance is required as we return to school this August. This is different from remote learning in the spring. Please contact the school office if your student will be absent from class at any time throughout the school day. Parents will be required to provide a reason for the absence. If your student is ill, symptoms will need to be provided to the school office. If your child will be absent for any portion of the day for any reason, please contact the office to let us know.

Teacher Links to Zoom

In case you missed it this morning, we sent out a SchoolMessenger to let parents know what your student will be receiving, making it easier for them to access their classes.

End of the Year Parade - June 2020

The links are up on the Woodlawn website for the end of the year parade.  If you know of an 8th grader from last year, you may want to share this with them.

Materials Pick Up - Middle School

There is no date set up for materials pick up at this point.  Once we decide on everything that we need and get all the materials in, we will set up a date and time for pickup.  Thank you to everyone who has been asking.

Schoology Parent Codes

Parents will receive a message through School Messenger on Wednesday, August 26th with their parent access code for Schoology. Directions will also be attached to the message.  This happens every year during the first week of school.

FAMILY EXPECTATIONS for Zoom

Family Expectations in the Remote Learning Environment.  This is for our partnership.  Thanks.

Long Grove Covered Bridge

I feel bad for the LG covered bridge.  Twice in the first five days of operation, either a bus or truck has hit this Long Grove landmark.  Greg Grana public service announcement...if it looks like you might not make it, you might not make it.  Go around.  I do love that the downtown Long Grove area is looking revitalized.

Finally, in this challenging time, I think that I owe this community a little insight into the people who are responsible for the education of your child.  For months, I have been looking forward to school starting up again.  I have watched our district plan, change direction, plan, change direction and then plan some more.  Countless hours were put in, including our outstanding A.P. Mrs. Garlick, who was a key voice at the State level, discussing what schools needed in order to reopen.  Our School Board has set a course, our Superintendent has listened and crafted a plan, our district office personnel have worked tirelessly in order to give our teachers direction, heading into this school year.  I envision my role to be the person who informs all sides and holds them accountable.  Students need to be at every class, on time, every day.  Teachers need to be prepared, communicate with all stakeholders and build relationships with our children.  I ask that the community support our work with students.  When your student complains, lend them a sympathetic ear but keep them focused on the end goal, keeping pace with their education.  None of our roles are going to be easy, they never are.  When we hear about schools or districts that are struggling, Woodlawn and D96 schools will succeed.  The key is keeping our focus on learning.
