Woodlawn Principal's Blog 5/22/20

Happy Friday on Memorial Day Weekend!   Saying goodbye to our 8th graders is never easy, but to do it virtually is even harder.  This was a special group to me and they are a class that has been highly respected by the entire staff of Woodlawn.  We will be honoring them over the next week with classroom goodbyes, graduation and an eighth grade parade.  May is our month to celebrate their accomplishments and show them how much they are respected.

No School (remote learning) this Monday, May 25th for Memorial Day.

8th Grade Assembly

Lloyd Bachrach shared his stories with our 8th grade students and parents last night via zoom.  It was wonderful to see our families sharing this experience together.  Thank you Woodlawn 8th grade community!

Yearbooks

Unfortunately, our yearbooks will not be ready until the middle of June.  We will work on a plan to get the yearbooks to our students over the summer.

May 26 - 8th Grade Celebration Day

The 8th Grade Teacher Teams are planning Zoom sessions to share their traditional fun end-of-the-year assembly videos and say good-bye.

May 26 - 8th Grade Graduation

The formal graduation ceremony video will be sent to families this evening.  8th graders are encouraged to dress-up and enjoy a special evening viewing it as a family.  A link to this event will be sent out May 26th.

Classroom Books/Items

Please help your student look for items that may belong to the school.  Things like classroom books, calculators or library books.  If you child looks for things like my children did, it may be the least amount of effort ever.  Thanks for helping.

Material Disclaimer

We packaged all hallway lockers and PE locker materials in the same bag.  My concern is with the PE materials as the students either changed lockers, lost their locks or shared with another student.  Please know that we did our best to get you the right materials.

If you recieved items that do not belong to you, there will be a return bucket by the front door of Woodlawn beginning on June 1st.

We welcome our graduating 8th graders to come back for one last hurray! Head back to Woodlawn and wave good-bye from the safety of your car to the Woodlawn staff.  Drive into the Woodlawn parking lot, wave to staff members who will be socially distanced on the sidewalk, follow the path into the bus turnaround and head home!  The send off parade will be from 1-2:30p.m. next Friday.  You do not have to show up at 1p.m.

Learning Center Items

Parents, the students will be receiving an email that shows outstanding Learning Center items.  Please check that they have received this email so they can gather these items and return them on their assigned day.  After all items are collected and inventoried, students will be notified of anything that is still outstanding.

8th Grade items on the iPad

Not long after the school year ends, 8th Grade student accounts will be disabled.  In order to make sure you have everything you want, follow the directions on the link. This will allow you to download all of your docs to a zip folder on your home computer or transfer them to a different Google account. Directions can be found here: https://takeout.google.com/

Register for the 2020–21 School Year

If you haven't already registered your new or returning District 96 student for the 2020–21 school year, please do so right away. Having an accurate enrollment count is important for anticipating staffing needs appropriately. Please tell new neighbors and friends to contact the public info coordinator [email protected] with registration questions and for info on options to delay/waive registration fees. No song, just sign up.

Finally, today I am 55.  Yes, the Sammy Hagar kid of 55.  Yikes.  As a gift to myself, I am done writing for the day.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend.
