Woodlawn Principal's Blog 5/15/20

It is a beautiful Friday afternoon!  I hope everyone is having a great day and enjoying this perfect weather day.  I have a ton of items for the blog this week.  I know it is rough, but try and read it all.  Lots and lots of important, end of the year information.

Medication Pick Up

In keeping with our School Board Policy, any unused medication remaining at the end of the school year must be picked up by parents. This ensures the safety and well being of all children.

The medications from each building have been picked up and brought to the ELC located at the following address:

990 Corporate Woods Parkway

Vernon Hills, Illinois 60061

You may pick the medication(s) up on any of the following days between 8:00 AM-3:00 PM:

Tuesday, May 19th

Wednesday, May 20th

Thursday, May 21st

If you have any questions about medication pick up or cannot make any of the designated times, please contact:

Learning Center Items

Parents, the students will be receiving an email that shows outstanding Learning Center items.  Please check that they have received this email so they can gather these items and return them on their assigned day.  After all items are collected and inventoried, students will be notified of anything that is still outstanding.

End of the Year - 8th Grade

It is really happening.  They are leaving me.  Here are a couple of items that 8th grade parents need to be on the lookout for.

Thursday, May 21st 7p.m.  --  Special Assembly for 8th graders and their parents.  Look for a SchoolMessenger notification on Thursday, May 21st that will contain a Zoom link.  I would love to have our 8th graders watch this presentation with their parents.  We have done this assembly for years and after talking with the PTO, we don’t want our 8th graders to miss out on this performance.

Friday, May 22 - Last Day of Remote Learning for 8th Graders

Tuesday, May 26 - 8th Grade Celebration Day - Graduation/Teacher Zoom Calls

The 8th Grade Teacher Teams are planning Zoom sessions to share their traditional fun end-of-the-year assembly videos and say good-bye.  The formal graduation ceremony video will be sent to families this evening.  8th graders are encouraged to dress-up and enjoy a special evening viewing it as a family.  As we’ve gone virtual, families did not order gowns this year.

Thursday, May 28 - 8th Grade Material Pick-Up, Technology Return, and Diploma Distribution

10:00-7:00p.m.  Register for a time on Sign-Up Genius

Friday, May 29 - 8th Grade Send Off

We welcome our graduating 8th graders to come back for one last hurrah! Head back to Woodlawn and wave good-bye from the safety of your car to the Woodlawn staff.  Look for details next Friday in my blog.

8th Grade items on the iPad

Not long after the school year ends, 8th Grade student accounts will be disabled.  In order to make sure you have everything you want, follow the directions on the link. This will allow you to download all of your docs to a zip folder on your home computer or transfer them to a different Google account. Directions can be found here: https://takeout.google.com/

Future Staff Planning Days

Looking ahead to next week, no new instruction or learning plans sent to students on Friday, May 22nd.  The purpose of this day is for students to catch up on any work that they have not been able to complete to the best of their ability and submit it to their teachers.  Instruction for 6th and 7th graders will begin again on Tuesday, May 26th, and the nature of this instruction may include more closure activities and less content specific activities.  Remember that Monday, May 25th is Memorial Day.

Register for the 2020–21 School Year

If you haven't already registered your new or returning District 96 student for the 2020–21 school year, please do so right away. Having an accurate enrollment count is important for anticipating staffing needs appropriately. Please tell new neighbors and friends to contact the public info coordinator [email protected] with registration questions and for info on options to delay/waive registration fees. No song, just sign up.

Pick up information went out via SchoolMessenger on Monday of this past week. I will remind everyone in the blog next Friday how pick up will look!

Finally, I failed.  I have tried to stay clear of the grocery store, but Mother’s Day showed up and I had to get my act together.  We are talking about making 3 meals, add a gift, a nice card and some flowers.  One store, all my shopping done in one spot.  (BTW, the flowers turned out nicely, points for me!)  Wearing my mask (thank you to the parent who donated one to me), I started to go through the store. Immediately, my glasses fogged up and now I'm traveling by my sense of hearing because I cannot breathe and I cannot see.  Not planning out what the meals were going to be, I wandered aimlessly around the perimeter of the store.  Back and forth, no plan of action.  When I finally decided to head down an aisle, I was greeted with a dirty look.  Clueless and still breathless, I wondered what was up with that.  When I made it to the end of the aisle, I noticed that I was going the wrong way down a one way street.  Dang, my bad.  At the end of the next aisle, I saw an item that I needed but it would mean that I once again would be breaking the law.  Being the rebel that I am, I looked around for some type of 16 year old authority figure, left my cart behind and I kid you not, walked backwards to the item I needed.  I guess that if I were called out, I would pretend to have just missed the item I needed.  Rebel.  This continued as I couldn’t really embrace the directional aisles.  I did leave my cart right in the middle of an aisle which caused a traffic jam at one point and more dirty looks followed.  Luckily, no one talks.  When the checkout rolled around, I was terrified that I was going to mess up that whole process.  While checking out, I realized that I had forgotten something.  With carts backed up for 30 feet (5 people), I decided to just roll with what I had.  Too much pressure.  At least Father’s Day will be here soon.  Watch my wife order out that day.

Have a good weekend!
