Woodlawn Principal's Blog 9/20/19

Time is rolling by quickly and we are getting into the groove of the school year.  I cannot believe that we just finished our 5th week of school! If there is one thing that I need to work on at this point, it would be that our 6th graders are feeling very comfortable right now.  They like the freedom in the hallways and are tending to be loud and run in the hallways. Our 7th graders are getting it and I am in love with this group of 8th graders. Just a couple of items for the blog this week.  Thanks to our PTO for sponsoring our Culver’s Special Lunch today!!!

Woodlawn Spirit Week! (9/23- 9/27) - Our first spirit week of the year is upon us!  Beginning Monday, each day will have a theme that I hope our students will participate in.  As parents, I hope that you encourage your student to join in the festivities.

MONDAY- Sports/Hobby Day - Bears, Cubs, Blackhawks, White Sox, Packers, Horseback Riding or whatever other activities the children participate in.

TUESDAY- Twin or Iconic Duo Day - Dress up with a friend as a famous “duo/ pair”.  I am trying to find Lex Luther to my Superman.

WEDNESDAY- Hallway Color Day - This one is fun!

8th-red  7th-yellow   6th-green

THURSDAY-School Spirit Day (Woodlawn, SHS, or College)  Our new Woodlawn spirit wear looks great!

FRIDAY- Pajama Day - Slippers are cool as well.

HAT DAY can be EVERYDAY this week --  Donate $1 to wear a HAT any day of this week! Money collected in homeroom. All money  raised will go to the American Red Cross to help with Hurricane Dorian.

Help Prevent Missed Emails from School District 96

Some District 96 parents reported they did not receive their student's MAP scores sent by email (from [email protected]) on Sept. 6. Delivery by several specific email service providers proved to be problematic.

The District has received the following specific instructions to help prevent missed emails for parents/guardians who use one of the following email service providers: MSN, Outlook, Hotmail, or Live

• Log into MSN, Outlook, Hotmail, or Live from a computer workstation.

• Click the PEOPLE icon in the extreme lower left-hand corner of the page (next to the Mail and Calendar icons). A new window will open.

• On the new window, click NEW CONTACT.

• Type in Jeanne Spiller into the First Name and Last Name fields.

• Type in [email protected] into the email address field.

• Click CREATE.

(Ms. Spiller is the District's assistant superintendent for teaching and learning.)

Repeat this process multiple times as you wish, creating contacts for your building principal (names/email addresses follow) and E-NEWS 96: Betsy Fresen, [email protected]

Principal Names/Email Addresses:

Willow Grove: Jennifer Smith [email protected]

Country Meadows: Meghan Bird [email protected]

Ivy Hall: Robert Hanrahan [email protected]

Kildeer: Vail Kieser [email protected]

Finally, I have issues.  Everything I do turns into a competition.  Cut the lawn...I have to edge, make sure the lines are all in the same direction (different direction from week to week), proving that I have the best lawn on the block.  I am winning (not in a Charlie Sheen kind of way). Go for a bike ride, I barrel down the street to get in the driveway first. Most of the time, the person I am riding my bike with doesn’t even know that I am competing with them.  Another win, or as my boys would say, W. (pronounced Dub). I already mentioned in a previous blog my parking spot issues...Recently, I noticed that I am taking my competition out into public. While at Costco, during the peak sample testing time (noon on a Saturday), I try to get as many samples as I can from the different stations, without the sample person noticing that I am coming back multiple times.  Who does this? Am I really the leader of this amazing middle school? What if a Woodlawn parent notices me doing this? I simply love the competition of it all. Once the sample person looks at me like they have seen me before, I move on. Many times I refer to myself as normal, but am I? These are examples of how I humor myself. W.

Have a great weekend!
