Woodlawn Principal's Blog 8/23/19

The first full week is done and our students are getting into the groove of school.  I am thrilled with the positive start we have had. The staff was treated to an amazing welcome back lunch from our PTO with a Stranger Things theme on Thursday.  The talented individuals in this community never ceases to amaze me! I am really looking forward to meeting the parents at Curriculum Night this Monday and Wednesday!

Curriculum Nights

This Monday, 6th grade parents can meet the classroom teachers while walking the schedule of their student.  Please start the evening at 7p.m. in the gym to hear some critical information and pearls of wisdom from yours truly, go through the classes and end with our P.E., Exploratory and Spanish teachers.

7th & 8th grade will be on Wednesday, August 28th.  Since you heard from the P.E., Exploratory and Spanish teachers last year, they will not be a part of our festivities.  Each night will last until roughly 8:30p.m.

MAP Scores -

We made the decision this year to turn off the ability for students to see their RIT score immediately upon submitting their test.  In past years, this feature has been turned on. Instead, students will receive their scores through an individual discussion with their teacher at some point following the MAP testing window.  In addition, MAP score reports will be emailed to parents on Friday, September 6th beginning at 3pm.

6th Grade Lunch This Thursday, August 29th

Pizza is served!  (I have a bit of history with pizza here at Woodlawn…)

The PTO sponsored welcome back lunch for 6th grade students is this Thursday, August 29th during the 6th grade lunch period from noon - 12:25p.m.  Parents are welcome to join the PTO at this event, but we ask that you sign up on the membership tool kit.

Approved Snacks: What Parents Need to Know

The District has revised the APPROVED SNACK LIST, adding more items to this list to give families more choices. The items the list includes are free of the Top 8 allergens: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat.

This list includes the foods that are approved for students' Daily Snacks. It also includes (for children in Grades 1–5) foods approved for Special Events such as birthday treats for a class or for PTO Halloween, Winter, or Valentine's Day parties.

IMPORTANT: All items for Daily Snacks–with the exception of fruits and vegetables–MUST be prepackaged to allow staff to easily check that snacks meet the approved requirements.

Director of Educational Services Amy Gluck also has provided responses to FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) about foods approved for daily snacks/special events.

For your convenience, find links to the District 96 Approved Snack List and Approved Snack List FAQs on the homepage of the District 96 website and the homepage of each school.

 ***NOTICE OF WEED CONTROL TREATMENT***

District 96 uses Integrated Pest Management--a program that combines

preventive techniques, non-chemical methods (such as bait traps), and the

appropriate use of pesticides (with a preference for products least harmful to

human health and the environment).

On Saturday, August 24, 2019, the District 96 landscape contractor, Acres

Group, will treat all grass areas and fields adjacent to the school properties for all

Kildeer Countryside District 96 Buildings. If you have any questions regarding

this application you may contact Sam Miranda, Director of Facilities and

Transportation at (847) 459-4260.

**The weed control treatment is always one of my favorite notices of the year.  Thank you for not notifying me when you fertilize your lawn.

Finally,  I am about to say goodbye to my Sunday’s for the next 4 months.  Maybe I should say goodbye to my family because football takes over from noon until I fall asleep on a Sunday evening.  I blame fantasy football. I am in four separate leagues (don’t tell my wife, I only admit to two of them), and it consumes my Sunday.  The problem is that I cannot drop one of the leagues because I am going to offend either my high school friends, my work people, the college crew or my favorite league, the Grana Family League where we only play for the pride of being #1.  I wind up being tied to my electronics, living or dying if my kicker makes or misses a kick (sorry/not sorry Bear fans). Anyways, I may be coming to a point where I have to reevaluate my addiction to football and really meaningless games. My wife thinks that I am crazy (not just for this, but she uses it as an artifact), at the same time,  I have seen her watching the West Wing reruns on multiple occasions.  I think that she is on her 3rd loop. So which is worse? Much like last week when I talked about being in the wrong line all of the time, professional football players should hope that I never pick them because my guys usually get hurt. So if you know someone who is hunkered down watching hours of football at a time, know that I am right there with them. I will let you know if I have had any success this year.

Have a great week.
