Woodlawn Principal's Blog 8/9/19

It is time to begin!  The building looks beyond amazing, the classrooms are ready and all the preparations have been made.  I am looking forward to seeing the entire Woodlawn staff on Monday, the families on Wednesday at locker set up and students showing up on Thursday for the first day of school.  I am very excited about this school year and all of the opportunities that our students will experience.

Approved Snacks: What Parents Need to Know

The District has revised the APPROVED SNACK LIST, adding more items to this list to give families more choices. The items the list includes are free of the Top 8 allergens: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy, and wheat.

This list includes the foods that are approved for students' Daily Snacks. It also includes (for children in Grades 1–5) foods approved for Special Events such as birthday treats for a class or for PTO Halloween, Winter, or Valentine's Day parties.

IMPORTANT: All items for Daily Snacks–with the exception of fruits and vegetables–MUST be prepackaged to allow staff to easily check that snacks meet the approved requirements.

Director of Educational Services Amy Gluck also has provided responses to FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) about foods approved for daily snacks/special events.

For your convenience, find links to the District 96 Approved Snack List and Approved Snack List FAQs on the homepage of the District 96 website and the homepage of each school.

Picture Day

Picture Day is August 22nd during our P.E. classes.  Go find your middle school yearbook picture and show it to the family.  It will probably make them feel better.  I cut myself shaving in 7th grade on picture day.  I was a wolfchild.

iPad Distribution

Students will receive their iPads on either Thursday or Friday.  Woo hoo.

Woodlawn Information

Look in this blog or on the Woodlawn website to see information on clubs and sports, study halls and daily announcements throughout the school year.  I will have more detailed information in the blog next week on clubs, sports and study halls!

Finally, I want you to think about your favorite teacher/professor. Take 30 seconds and get that person in your head.   I will wait….

How did that person make you feel, think or act?  For some of you, I am sure that someone popped into your head right away.  Others may have needed to compare a couple of people and still others may have struggled to even find one.  Teacher efficacy is essential for the success of our students. I am wildly proud of the staff that has been assembled for this school year.  When you have had the success that Woodlawn continually achieves, your people are chosen for other opportunities to lead and share the impact that this building has had upon them.  The great thing about the Woodlawn culture and level of expectation has been established, is that it drives this staff to continually achieve great things. If I were to have a wish, it would be that every student who goes through Woodlawn one day says that one of their middle school teachers is that favorite teacher.  As for me, Dr. Peterson was my guy. Dr. Peterson was a music professor at my college. For three years, my major was baseball. He was teaching a humanities course and I just happened to be assigned to him.  He really challenged me to take my learning to a deeper level because he knew that I was capable. He changed my whole perception of what I was able to achieve.  The thing is, he will never know the impact he had upon me. Luckily, I know. See you next week.
