Woodlawn Principal's Blog 5/31/19

This is it!  The last blog of the 2018-19 school year.  I am always amazed at how quickly time goes by.  It seems like just yesterday that this school year started.  Before you know it, graduation is here and the students are moving up a grade.  It was really nice to see the 5th graders from Country Meadows yesterday. They look like a really nice group.  8th grade parents, I hope that you continue to read this blog and see the great things happening in D96.

2019 SUMMER READING/ASSIGNMENT–Remember to Read!

We encourage summer reading for all our students. This practice is important–research suggests that students can lose more than two months of academic progress if they don't continue to read during summer months.

Please see SUMMER READING for the parent letter/reading assignment info and suggested reading resources for your student (by grade level).

Summer Area Opportunities in STEM

For families interested in learning about STEM-related summer opportunities in the area, see Chicago-area STEM Camp Guide – Summer 2019.

Finally, we send three long time Woodlawn employees off into retirement.  Science teacher Rick Polidoro, clerical aide Jodi Seal and social worker Ann Tripp.  One of the main things that I embrace and protect at Woodlawn is our culture. Everyone shares in our success and we collaborate at the highest levels, ensuring student success.  Rick, and Ann have been part of our original group of teachers who started when Woodlawn opened in 1999. They have both contributed so much to our success and have done so much for the children at Woodlawn.  Rick has been a driving force in the success of our Science Olympiad team and is called MacGuyver by his colleagues because of his ability to build the coolest of science projects. Ann did the caring, personal work with our students.  The work she has done goes largely unnoticed except by those most in need of her services. Ann is also our faculty expert in all things Seinfeld. Jodi has been a quiet contributor, doing everything and anything needed to ensure materials are ready for students.  Thank you Rick, Jodi and Ann!

Final tag update...we are in the final hours of tag.  As of right now, I am not it. However, this week has been a rough one for me.  Having never been it at the end of the game, the crew playing the game has banded together to get me  (Some would call it collusion). I have been tagged 4 times this week. I found out that they have been planning against me since early April and a chain of text messages have been swirling around.  I will be adding to this post sometime tomorrow to let you know what the final outcome will be!

Saturday, June 1st, 2019.  I survived without getting tagged last.  One of my friends was at my house twice, visited a couple of area golf courses after school and even swung by my sister's place in Arlington Heights.  It was very comical to see me yesterday.  I was looking over my shoulder everywhere, including when I left my hide out at 11:30p.m. last night.  Once again, I have 11 months of not being it.  Thank you to everyone who didn't turn me in to this crew.
